Question Rear end getting lose...

So I'm driving down the street doing about 70. I drop it into 2nd and start braking as im about to take a hard right turn. Sudendly my rear end gets lose and wobbles to the side while in a straight line. It kinda feaked the hell out of me but I managed to get it back in line before turning.
----Has anyone experienced anything like this?

You downshifted to the wrong gear.

The engine doesn't want to wrap out at 7500 with decel fuel cut, so it forces the tires to travel... say 35mph... but inertia (minus friction) says you're gonna go 70...

So lets see, front tires go 70, back tires go 35... WTF do you think is gonna happen...

Its the exact(plus 35mph) same as going around a corner and pulling the ebrake. Except teh fact you're decel fuelcutting your engine at high revs... I'm sure your engine loves you right now...

EDIT: removed getting personal... he doens't need to be told he doesn't know how to drive-- see im trying to have a better attitude...

AND WHY THE **** ARE YOU DRIVING 70 ON A STREET!?

More than a little fast for a surface road...

maybe you should try something called rev matching or clutchless shifting? You won't destroy your rear end, tranny, or motor that way.

No, but he'll rip apart synchros, well not if he matches revs... but he's if hes dumping in turns, hes not going to take the time to laern rev matches...

Sure professionals do this, they actually know how to drive better than 99.5% of the forum members... And anyone who quotes teh above sentence saying I'm wrong is just kidding themselves.

Sticking it into second even if you didn't let the clutch out to decel is just not wise at that speed. However, chances are your brakes are either bad, or your suspension sucks. That is, if you didn't let the clutch out (as in, you didn't engage 2nd gear at 70mph). However, doing 70 on a 'street' that has a hard right turn, doesn't appear to be legal.

That reminds me, if he had wide tires, it would probably glaze the clutch? Think inertia has enough power going back through the driveline to do that?

ok ok, when i was younger I'll admit I did some stupdi ****, including having the tailend of the car in a lane with oncoming cars... Even whipped aroudn too fast in inclement wheather and was facing oncoming traffic...

I've been there, and I learned from it.

But I always had people ready to chew me out when i did something stupid... Keeps you from doing it again.

So RXDrive... come back and say something like
"Yeah it was stupid, but I'm getting the feel for the car" and you'll have our respect again.

I'm not a total dick, honestly.

Yes, if the tires won't give to the force, the clutch will (i've done that missing shifts before on the track and smoked the clutch for a few seconds before I fixed it)

must have been wide tires, was that your go cart fc?
BTW, I finnaly decided on some tires, 255 in the front and either 275 or 295 in the rear. going to be insane tire...Have to do some bodywork in the rear for the wheels, but it will be nice. I'll end up buyign a set of 205 studded and mount them on the stock wheels for winter though, I don't think those wide tires whould do well in snow, heh.

ok, yeah it was a little dumb especially not really knowing the car all that well.
--It was on wide road in the middle of the night with no traffic. I was trying to push the car near it's limit and I guess I over did it a little. Live and learn right.
Anyway I just wanted some of your input and--- I got it.
thanks

-And for the record: I didn't just drop it into second and let the engine just yoke my speed down. I stayed on the clutch and got on the brakes a little hard. When I completely let off the clutch at about 50 is when the car got lose on me. I probably should have giving a little more detail from the get go.

Coincidentaly, 60 is redline with 410 gearing, MAYBE 55 with 390... anythign above and your engine is hating on you with fuel cut...

And if it had fuel, it would probably not be to happy either...

Once you know yoru car you can get away with alot more from the forum members. But if you just got thecar and do something like this... you're aching to get yourself killed (from your own driving, not from the forum members)

Hah, I can wind my GTUs out to 68 in 2nd, well, when it was N/a form. My supercharger would be hating life that high.

What you managed to perform is an actual driving technique used by rally drivers (and drifters) to intentionally upset rear wheel traction. It's called Shift-Lock.
