Tranny swap - ready to begin
Tranny swap - ready to begin
I'm going to swap a turbo transmission into an N/A car. As far as I know, it only involves the custom driveshaft from Mazdatrix and a new clutch/flywheel. Can I use a turbo flywheel with my N/A engine? Just wondering if there were any other bugs that need to be worked out.
i still have to do mine (s4 NA drivetrain to s5 TII drivetrain, but so far i have the following
s5 turbo ii transmission
s5 turbo ii transmission crossmember
s5 turbo ii clutch
s4 turbo flywheel
s5 turbo ii starter
turbo ii slave cylinder
automatic driveshaft (custom necessary for best fitment)
this is a good time to replace your pilot and throwout bearings, as well as the front and rear seal
let me know if i'm forgetting anything

Don't worry about the clutch and flywheel, I'm thinking of ordering an ACT 4-puck clutch kit and pro-lite flywheel, but I'm just debating how streetable that setup would be. Right now I'm using an Exedy stage 1 clutch and a steel RB flywheel, which feels like stock, but my friends always stall whenever they try to start my car, hehe.
Thanks for the info on the slave cylinder and starter, good point. Will the N/A shifter work with the TII drivetrain?

The non-turbo flywheel/clutch assembly can be used with a turbo engine.
The turbo flywheel is bigger than the non turbo flywheel. The turbo flywheel cannot be used with a non--turbo transmission.
If you do use a turbo flywheel on a non-turbo engine, I think you have to change the front counterweight. I'm not 100% sure at the moment cause I just got off work and I'm kinda tired.

You'll need the custom driveshaft if you're not using the TII 3rd member/differential.
BTW, I think Project84 is correct about the front counterweight. It will have to be exchanged for the correct year's front counterweight that matches the flywheel counterweight.

EDIT:

Meh, look at that...interesting. 10 points for you!

yeah, according to this page, all 86-88 front counterweights are the same.
