I have an 86 GXL with some tranny issues, i plan on just replacing it but i wanted to know if i should just replace it with another gxl tranny or if there are benefits to using a diffrent tranny like a turbo one?

With a turbo tranny you need a new flywheel, clutch, tranny, driveshaft, rear end, etc. just replace it with a gxl trans unless you are doing a turbo swap later.

Any N/A Trans will work, you need to use the series crossmember that matches the trans.

Really? What did they do to make the vert tranny a little better? I thought all NA manual transmissions(of the same series) were the same.

Yes really. I am not sure why except for the fact that the car is heavier and maybe needed a small part in teh trans beefed up.

OP:
I THINK that the only difference between the S4 and S5 gear ratios is that S5 has a taller 5th gear, but check the FAQ section on 'what did my model come with' and check out s5 vs s4.
