tranny replace help

ok guys. i just bought my first 7 off of my buddy.he told me the tranny that he just replaced was toast. it only had 4th gear. so i pulled the tranny and the clutch release line from the release to the master cylinder is gone. i dont understand how it even had 4th gear, i know it had 4th gear because we had to move the car. it wouldnt go into any other gear. we tried and all it would do is grind. so basically what im asking is if that is y the car had no gear but 4th. and how it even had 4th. someone please help

Have you pulled the trany yet? Does it have a slave cylinder? What line is missing? I am unsure of what you mean by a "clutch release line".

I always hear about people replacing transmissions.. but I've never seen an FC transmission rebuild thread or write-up. Does anybody know why that is? I'll be doing a tranny rebuild on my 91NA in the next few months. I'll have to do a write-up.

well the haynes manual calls it a clutch release. its a small assembly that sits on top of the tranny its held on by two bolts. and it has a pin that goes a small rubber boot that engages the clutch. its hard to explain. ill try to get a pic.but if someone can help with that info then its much appreciated.

thats the slave cyl.
so your saying there was no clutch hose at all?!?!? maybe that was why you couldn't shift it into any gear....the clutch was constantly engaged.

dunno man, but swapping a tranny is pretty easy, done it many times with a regular jack and some true faithfull buddies 'course I had to by tons of beer

Yep, you are having problems due to it (the clutch )being engaged. I would replace that line and bleed the system and see what you come up with.

tranny replace

well to pull the tranny it was easy as pie. so i figure to go back in shouldnt be too bad. but the only thing im thinking is that if the clutch was engaged and everything then how it even drove in 4th gear. i moved the car so i know it engaged. its really weird how that clutch was engaging but when i pull the tranny the hose is gone.. its crazy. im gonna pull the oil pan off the tranny and see if there is shavings in it to see if i should bolt up the one that was in the car or put the original back in.. ill figure it out and post updates. thanks for the input and more is appreciated.
