tranny problems: cant find 1st, and 5th? wtf?

ive got a 87 Tii, and im haveing tranny problems. i just pulled my tranny to replace the pivot ball for the clutch fork. and while i was there, i replaced the neutral return spring. anyways, i put the car back together. throw about a quart of tranny fluid in there, because i didnt empty the tranny completely when i dropped the tranny, and see how it goes. get out of my driveway, and i suddenly cant go into first anymore. argh. then i find out, i cant go into 5th either. but 2nd, 3rd, and 4th work perfect. about 10 min of driveing later, i take a few corners in 3rd, and 4th, and i can go into 1st and 5th again. about every 5 min, it wont go into 1st/5th, and then it will suddenley be able to go into them.

when i try to go into 1st or 5th it will feel like the shifter is hitting a gate. and has gone as far as it can go, but just wont go far enough to make it into the gears. and when i try to disengage the clutch with it in 1st or 5th, it will pop the shifter back or if i try to hold it into the gears with alot of pressure it will just grind.

thanks
-Daniel

my friends TII was dead(battery) so we tried to push start it....while the car is moving, i wasnt able to put the car in first....no matter how hard i tried. so i had to do it in second...which didnt work but anywho the car had to be stopped before i could get the car in first or the car's transmission is warm.

does the shifter go into the 1st and 5th gear slots? if it does and doent engage it may be that your 1st & 5th shift forks may be broken. this is what happened to my buddies 1stgen dsm.

it will go in about half way, but then it will act like it hits a gate. like i said, sometimes it works, about 50% of the time....

Spring.

It's the neutral return spring, it's either been misinstalled or has broken (as mine did about 300 miles after I replaced mine.). If you force it, it will go into gear, as well as just fiddling with it and wiggling while pushing.
