tranny mount
ok. i know i need a tranny mount. and i had a look underneath. and it looks like the mount that sits between the tranny and the crossmember isnt there anymore.. and ive went to every parts place where i live. and none of them even know what im talking about.. its annoying.. so if someone could give me some insight on where to get a new mount. that would be great.. i dont really want to buy a new crossmember. so yeah.
and if anyone is confused on what im talking about i will take some pictures tomarrow.
thanks in advanced

Is this what your talking about?
Without that, your tranny wouldn't be able to mount to the crossmember and more than likely you'd hear/see your shifter bobing and smacking around.

Take a look here for the part/cost:

If the bushing is gone in the cross member, you'll need to replace the cross member as the bushing isn't sold separately. Also, if that is the case, you'll need to replace the trans mounts as they are collapsed, or have settled down and will destroy the new bushing if they are not replaced.

Yes, the crossbar will need replacing.
BUT...you also need to replace the two pads that cradle the transmission (look on the "y" shaped piece that the bolt is part of) because their collapse is what caused the damage to the crossbrace bush.
IMO, a hopelessly retarded design altogether but you gotta work with what you've got.

I took my tranny out a while ago... but just 2 months ago I took my diff out and put it back in... after the diff I started hearing a clunking sound every time I depress or let off the clutch. I thought it was the tranny so I checked under the car ('86) and saw the same thing hanging down as in that picture... it's like it's supposed to be holding the tranny up but it won't go any closer to the tranny. it stays a good inch from the tranny and will not tighten any more. So should I buy new mounts or should I focus on the diff to fix the clunking sound? thanks

well i say change the tranny mounts. it shouldnt affect the diff.. and if it looks like this. youll have to buy a new cross member and both the left and right mounts.. as for the diff... well.. i guess change the mounts and see if the sound continues. my car my car kinda clunks when going from a stop. but i figure its the tranny mount. because it feels like its almost coming out of gear.

well I have 2 cars.. an 86 and 87 and just checked the other car and the bolt is hanging down the exact same way... I honestly don't know if that's good or bad. but I stripped out the interior and I can definitely hear the clunking coming from the back.. so I doubt it's the tranny it's gotta be the diff

ya well I looked at it more... it sounded like it was comin from the tranny but with the interior stripped I can definitely hear it comin from the back. I checked everything out, no freeplay in the axles or driveshaft at all so I'm thinkin it's thinking it's the bushings... problem is I can't tighten the nuts down any more.. my clunking's pretty severe tho so I'd expect it to be something obvious... I mean it's clunking in every gear but the severity of the clunk is relative to the speed I put the clutch in or out. if anyone else could give some input that'd be great :]
and you might wanna go with the tranny mounts... if it helps lemme know

yeah i will let you know... and i had an idea.. to see if the mount on the crossmember is the issue.. im going to get a bunch of washers the same size as the big one in the picture. and fill the gap with them.. and see if it still klunks.. that should help me figure it out. and i will let you know what i come up with.
