perhaps a broken shift fork?

I'm not sure, but if you need a transmission quickly, i've got a 1990 5 speed for sale.

Hope you figure yours out though!

Good luck,
Manolis

Yeah this same thing happened to me when pulling into a shopping center after puting it in first, bang, boom, It would just bind in 1st 2nd and only go in revers, so I had to call a flatbed to come pick my car up. At least it didn't happen at high speeds!

long story short I went to a local junkyard and pulled a tranny from an 88 gxl, and put it in my 89 GTU at the time, ended up paying like $500 total, with a new clutch ect.. helps if you do it yourslef, pretty easy....

The part about 3rd or 5th both working is interesting. It could be just a worn out shift linkage. About 2 years ago my 5th gear got stuck. If I tried any other gear, it locked, so I limped home in 5th. I pulled the tranny in the driveway, took it apart, and found the lock nut on the main shaft had come loose, backed up & jammed 5th so tight I had to chisel the thrust collar off. It cost me $60 for the parts (2 lock nuts, thrust collar & retaining rings). I took a chance the bearings were OK. Then comes the magic – synthetic gear oil. It’s been together almost 2 years, and I nail 2nd at 6k and chirp the oversize rear tires almost daily.
