Tranny Install

Does anyone have any tricks or ideas on getting the transmission back up in the car after installing a new clutch? It was hard as hell to get off, but now we cant get it back on. Its up in the teeth hole of the pressure plate, but that is as far as we can get it. Any turning or rotating?

Just keep trying. It can be difficult sometimes. You actually have to make the right face as you say a prayer. I've had problems before getting one in and came back the next day and had it bolted up in 10 minutes.

the problem is the motor want to tilt forward so you have to get some one to pull th emotor back down . I used a very large bar and stuck it between my header and frame and wiggled it while th etranny was on its lift and it popped right in.

Yup. Motor tilts forward then the shifter area hits the body when trying to get it lined up.

Well we still can't get the Tranny up in there - we are about 1/2in aawy from the bottom and about 2 inches from the top coming together. Any Ideas? we've wiggled and pushed and kicked and cussed and everything. It acts like something is stuck on the inside. Another thing is that (while looking at the tranny from under the car) the left side will come closer but the right side wont, like something is stuck up in there on the right side. Is there anything on the right side that could stop it or impede its progress?

Well heres an update for those who have this trouble.....we first put the bolts on the bottom and tried to push the motor up and into the hole. That didnt work so we put the nut in the stud at the top and tightened it down somewhat, then bolted in the bottom and it slid itself right in no problem...hope you learn from my frustrations

I cut a stick to wedge between the radiator support & the steering pump bracket.
The more you can tilt the motor back, the easier it will be.

I balanced the tranny on a floor jack & wiggled it in (after 13 tries & 3 clutch plate resets).

I've got the engine propped all the way back using my strut bar, I wish that was the problem. I was wondering something about the clutch. On one side the center piece sticks out about 1.5 inches, and on the other side it almost flush. Does the piece sticking out face the reat of the car of the front. Right now it's facing the rear. Maybe that's it?

If you look into the assembly, the pilot bearing must be in the center of the disc splines. If it is, there should be no problem. As been stated, the back of the engine must be lowered so the trans goes in evenly, top and bottom. Try and maintain that relationship. It's heavy, but it will go.

Do you have an alignment tool? It helps you align the clutch before you torque down the pressure plate. Most clutch kits come with them

If you cant find one, I'll mail you one, if you dont mind the downtime. (You can BORROW it, I'd want it back, you know!)

I used the alignment tool and it still fits in there with no problem, so no issue there. It's really bizaar, because it should be sliding right into the engine, but it just doesn't want to go. It really feels like there is something in the way but I don't see anything.

guess its too late to tell u to change the shifter springs......get rid of that sloppy shiftin while the tranny is out of the car.....i wish i remembered when i did my clutch change

The alignment tool has some slack.
Also roll the tool across a flat surface to see if it's straight. (Like checking a pool Q.)

I took me 3 tries at resetting the clutch disc to get it centered close enough to go in.

i just did this last night , with out the weight of the tranny the motor tilts foward, you need to wedge something in there to tilt it back
