It might help. I had the same problem with my extra tranny, but I took it out and put my original back in that has grinding in 5th. I'm getting it rebuilt soon and a guy told me it might just be synchro's and should only be about $300 to rebuild.

Possibly, depending on how far gone your synchros are. I fixed the problem temporarily in one of my old cars (95' Honda Prelude) by using Pennzoil Synchromesh, which is a GM product supposed to be used in select GM cars. But it seemed to work pretty well in helping with the synchros. But thats only a temp. fix, rebuild or new tranny will be needed to fix the problem for good.

I have the same problem with mine, shifting into 2nd and 3rd as well. I may be wrong, but it seems to take longer for the synchros to speed up when its cold outside in the morning.

I'm sure its my synchros, but I don't want to throw down $300 for a tranny rebuild. For that price, does it include labor and installation, as well as parts?

Would it be a tough job to do to rebuild it myself?

My car seems to shift better in the morning when its cold out. Weird. I have been looking to see if there is an FC tranny cooler.

custom make you one. ive never heard of a cold tranny working better than a warm one. youve got yourself one unique problem there. my dad has had a mitsubishi montero for about 20 years and it wont go into reverse for **** except for when its cold out and he first starts it up. his trans is worn to **** though. only other case i know of involving cold

the syncros for 2nd and third alone cost close to $200, no real tech can rebuild a tranny for $300.

lighter weight fluid can help with the shifts but it is harder on the bearings and may cause them to whine.

also to note, it is much cheaper to replace the 5th gear syncro than it is to replace 2nd and 3rd, the 5th can be replaced without totally disassembling the tranny and is the cheapest of the syncros since it is the smallest.

Thats good information, thanks. Too bad my 2nd and 3rd gears are the ones that need synchros. My 4th and 5th are still beautiful.
