TPS test please help!

Hello all!

Is there a way to test if a TPS is in good condition while it is not installed? The sweep-test can be done I suppose, but what about the ~0 Ohms with no gas and ~5 kOhms at WOT?

I've found one but it is taken out of the car it used to be part of and also I can't put it in my car unless I buy it. Don't know if it's a good unit...

My car is an S5...

Thanx in advance!

Just test it, push it in and out with a multi meter to check its ohm.

I tried it with mine, same result for on/off the car. Narrow range failed.

so I guess it doesnt matter if the TPS is installed or not.

Thanx for the rapid reply!

Yeah but how will I know where the no gas and WOT positions are? For instance if it is also faulty and when installed let's say at WOT it would give 6500 Ohms, by sweeping it out of the car I won't know that this is not the WOT position when I see 5000 Ohms...

Oh also what is narrow range?

the TPS has 2 sensor, narrow range and wide range. you should know what they mean

and to test it, just push the sensor in first, read the multi meter, then let go, and check the range with the FSM (I dont remember the exact value right now)

btw, i dunno if urs is turbo or NA, its the same sensor, its just the bracket and wiring color is different. so that means you can buy a used one, test it, if its ok, swap the bracket with your broken one (if its not the same)

Mine failed, and I just ordered a brand new one from MMS(I dont want it used, I have my own reasons ), Turbo version, Cuz its about 100 something bux cheaper. when it comes next week. I am gonna do the Turbo to NA TPS swap with pictures

It's a 1991 TurboII...

The point that the sensor is fully depressed corresponds to the WOT point? And this is why you can tell?

Sorry for my ignorance, I haven't taken out my old TPS yet and therefore lack the technical details about it...

no

when its depressed, its closed position.

when its "all the way out", its WOT.

you can test it on the car, just unplug it, then test it. you can play with the throttle , its just right next to the sensor.

All the information you need can be found in the service manual, for TPS info, its in the Fuel and emissions TURBO pdf.

Yayyy thank you soo much nycgps!!! Thanx for your time!

I will uninstall mine and make a thorough cleaning with potentiometer contact cleaner... If it will still act funny, I'll replace it while following your advice!

Cheers!

Niiiiice!!!

I measured mine...

Narrow range:
Closed: 1030 Ohms (800-1200) Cool
Full throttle: 3500 Ohms (4000-6000) Not Cool

Full range:
Closed: 250 Ohms (600-900) Not Cool at all...
--then a huge open circuit gap for approximate half the gas way -- really bad... this is what is probably causing the 6500rpm hesitation I suffer from
Full throttle: 7800 Ohms (3400-5100) Really bad too...

Think I'll also need a replacement...

Cheers!
