tps question

Hey,
When my car is running, and I push in and out the TPS what should the engine do. At this point, mine does absolutely nothing. (and yes my car idles at 1500 or so). Just want to make sure that is more than likely my problem before i go spending moneys.

ER, uh, in the 87FSM, there is a check of the deceleration control system. You hold the engine speed to over 2000 rpm and make sure the rpm varies when the throttle sensor is pushed in with a finger.

Now I agree that is a bit different than what was implied in this post. The implication was as if the tps was just a resting there at idle.

And there is a little cavet there in the manual that says Please don't hold the sensor in completely. So ....don't.

And, yes, there's a bunch of people that mess with their tps out here. Your's is a series four so the best thing in life that you can do, is..........fully heat the engine up and idle the car. Monitor the voltage output of the green/red wire at the tps plug with it connected up. Turn the tps screw until the voltage is one volt give or take a touch ( .9 to 1.1volts). Now forget about it and go about your business UNLESS you do something in the future to adjust the throttle stop screw or the THERMOWAX. Then you have to readjust the tps.

Your high idle might be a maladjusted thermowax. Maybe yes, maybe no. Or it could be the bac sticking and it needs cleaning. Or the throttle cable is tight. Or the car is never fully warmed up. Or you have a vacuum leak. N0NE OF THE ABOVE require MONEY to fix.

Thanks. This is why I have never been too fond of working on cars Whenever I go to fix one thing; i manage to break another or something along those lines. Thanks.

You should follow the FSM procedure for setting idle

if you can't set it, meaning you can't get it to go down to 750 rpms, then check for:

- vacuum leak (hoses, injector grommets, diaphragms)
- throttle plates are open too much at rest (maybe previous owner played around with the screw in that 8mm nut above the primary plates on the intake manifold)
- whatever else HAILERS mentions

I have a high idle problem just like you. I have adjusted the TPS at least 20 times. It constantly changes values every time i check it. I am now going through every procedure in the FSM to try to correct the Idle issue on my car. Im on the thermowax section and am going to check this. After checking and adjusting all this crap is when you need to adjust the TPS.

So try following the FSM and our advice on your high idle problem before you go spending any "moneys"

It looks like my throttle body might be being held open or soemthing. I noticed if I give it some extra help (aka pushing "gingerly" i can get the idle down to 750....or even lower as so desired). I'm going to try out the one 8mm screw really quick (hopefully it fixes)

(and why did i have to leave my FSM at my shop......looks like more downloading.) lol
