Top speed

I have an 89 n/a gtu and it tops out at 122...

is that because of the governor or is that all it has...?

what does yours top out at?

I got my base 86 up to 130mph. I think the s5 cars weigh more which offsets the hp increase. Your motor might be tired as well. But your 122mph sounds about right.

Maybe with a drop-in k&n filter with new cats & exhaust you could get to 130mph+

I don't think RX's had a governor

Oh and damn i thought my gayomatic was slowing down my fc, all stock I was able to hit 119 with automatic.... car reaches 90 much quicker now after the few upgrades I wonder if I could hit 130 hmm

Automatic hits 119 and stops which is a few 100 rpm below when the 2ndaries kick in

Something is wrong. The car should be able to redline 4th easily. There is no governer. When my car was NA I did this multiple times. Don't expect the car to accelerate very quickly...keep your foot to the floor and your eyes on the road.

if i recal correctly the GTU has 4:20 gears in the back while the GXL has 4:10 gears so the GTU would have a slightly lower top speed. i dont think those ratios are correct but i know the GTU has shorter gearing

GTU is 4:30 ratio.

You are limited buy RPM now.
You will need a better fuel management and better manifold/air flow.

I forgot to add check to see if you AUX port actuators are working right.

I had my 90 GTUs up to 144. The fuel cut on the Turbos is the only type of governor I can think of.

This is incorrect. The "GTUs" had a 4.3 rear. The GTU, S4 and S5, had a 4.10 rear.

What rpm where you at and such?

I was going down highway 5, probably went WOT for well over 15-20 mins the temp started rising and the rpms wouldn't go higher, due to the 3rd gear of the automatics.

I did a GPS read 120MPH in an 91 S5 vert with an S4 engine with non functional aux ports and a slipping automatic transmission.... If you can't top that I think something is wrong.

I gps'd the old gxl to 151mph. Still had some more tach room, but was getting closer to traffic. Lots of nice empty highways out here.

I got my S4 GXL up to 133mph with nothing but K&N intake and Pace Setter headers. I almost died but it was probably capable of more if we had a longer road. It was ***** quick up to 80 and then kinda stalled out and took a w hile to get past the dead zone but then took off again.

With my TII I have only been around one hundred mph cause i'm still tuning it. I need to get to my local drag strip so I can actually open up my car and get it dialed in.

Bone stock your car should top out around 145 or so if it cant either you need a tune up or as stated or your engine is getting tired.

Maybe if it is a Turbo.

Top speed on an USA spec stock non turbo vert is about 125 MPH. On an USA spec stock non turbo coupe it is about 133-135, top speed on an USA spec stock Turbo is about 140.

And remember that 99% of the FC speedos out there are off (+ or -) about 5 to 10% at speeds above 100 MPH. So if you are basing your top speed by the speedo and not a GPS unit, then chances are you are not see the correct speed.

i dunno know about you guys but even though my GXL could get up to 133mph it was a useless fact. I mean simply that it took so long to get there that it didn't matter in most cases. Most of the roads are limited to 45 where I live and aren't any good for racing around, the highway is even too crowded for anything above 80mph most of the time. The best part of the rx7 power band was always from 10 to 100mph for me, after that it got too slow if you know what I mean.

My turbo fc is probably pretty fast all out but it stays under 60mph for the most part, it just gets to 60 really quick.
