almost forgot......

Does anyone know te gear ratios of a '88 GXL 5-speed stick. I'm assuming 5th is 1:1 from experience but was wondering it it might be a slight overdrive, like .9:1 or something. I want the ratios for all 5 gears.

Thumbs up My top 5 things in no particular order.....

1. Drop in K&N filter. Alternative, K&N cone filter and fabricate a cold air box.

2. If you can work with non-compliant emmision issues, Racing Beats Cat. replacement pipe and presilencer to reduce exhaust restriction.

3. GTUs rear diff. Alternatively, replace your current rear diff's third member to get a GTUs type gear ratio. Give's what, 4.33 ratio?

4. Racing Beat, or the like, aftermarket mufflers to reduce exhaust restiction.

5. Lighten Steel flywheel (assuming this is your daily driver) with Centerforce (or other like quality) clutch.

Advance yer timing slightly.
Redline gear oil.
Viscous LSD from an 89-91 TII or better yet the 4.3 rear end from a GTUs
Remove power-steering, A/C and relocate batter (get a smaller one as well) to a storage bin
Lots of decals..
Actually, get a very nice set of grippy tires.

Plus, some of those things are free!

What exacty ddo yo mean by "street port"? I know how to port just not a street port(I'm used to mtorcycles). Emissions are gonnabe a prob. Damn the state!!!! I'm definatly not getting rid of A/C or P/S. I know I'm lazy as all hell.NO DECALS! I'm thinkin of a system from NOS(insert lil R in a circle), probably a 10 lb. tank, no idea what shot yet. I'm also thnkin a nice set of Dago-made Pirelli tires, I want a high speed rating though b/c I'm planning on two sets, one forthe street and one for the track.
One more thing, what's the higher model, the GXL or the GTU? I was under the impression it was the GXL.

I was kidding about the decals.

The GXL has more power accessories, while the GTU is a bit more stripped down and lighter...thusly faster.

2 - 2.002
3 - 1.366
4 - 1.000
5 - 0.697
Rev - 3.493
Final - 4.100 (88 GXL has LSD)

Much like a motorcycle, you will need to disassemble the engine to port it, so it is probably best to wait until you need a rebuild. Most professional RX-7 speed shops only charge about $200 for street porting if you give them the housings, or you could do it yourself with a template. See here:

Please do not use disparaging ethnic slurs on this forum.

1 Port on both intake and exhaust using Mazdatrix's race porting and exhaust templates (They sell them and they got a tutorial on their page) there is not too much diff between race and street porting so go straight for race (No one here uses street ports not even girls).
2 Get bigger secondary injectors.
3 Get a Racing beat header and install a single 2 1/2" to 3" pipe as straight as possible, you can use a first gen Racing Beat Muffler (The bigger one) there are two types.
4 Remove secondary butterflies and re route the hose from underneath for much more cooler intake air.
5 Bigger fuel pump and maybe a fuel pressure regulator (Mallory is the best kind).
6 Work on the timming.
7 Have fun!!!!
