Tons of smoke during cold startup

Recently my car has been pouring smoke only during a cold startup. The smoke engulfs the area around my house and as the idle oscillates, it makes a pop sound each time the rpms go down. Its white smoke but doesn't smell sweet. Its a bit of a burnt smokey smell. When the car starts to warm up all the smoke goes away and runs/drives fine.

Going through alot of oil too? Gas mileage suck?

I'm guessing weak oil control rings and when they warm up they swell up and seal

Or really leaky injectors, but if it was that much fuel leaking, i'd figure you'd play hell starting it cold

Another possibility is a bad coolant seal and its leaking internally while the engine is cooling off.....thats what mine is doing, minus the smoke though

General car info, it's an S5 FC with an NA 13b stock engine. As far as I know it has never been rebuilt and has 117k miles on it.

Well if it's never been rebuilt, you're very possibly due for a rebuild a this mileage, depending on how exactly it was maintained/driven by any previous owners. Do a compression test.

Well I know that some coolant gets into the combustion chamber but I could drive for weeks to more than a month without the coolant level going down much at all (though it does leak when cooling off as you mentioned). I check the oil level occasionally throughout a 1000 mile mark just to make sure, and I'd say the oil consumption is pretty normal. I'll look into the others you've mentioned and see if I can rule anything out.

sounds like its due for a rebuild, not so much due to mileage but due to age.

coolant or oil, doesn't matter if something is burning off. coolant won't always smell sweet and will be quite a bit more noticeable in clouds of smoke during the cold season. by the description it sure sounds like it has a failing coolant seal.

Heres a link to the video showing the smoke. There was much more smoke when I first started it up but it cleared a bit by the time I recorded it. Then it clears up as it gets closer to operating temperature.

Correct, and its probably NOT the seals, but the seal jacket on one of the irons (or more than one) that let go due to corrosion/erosion.

The problem will only get worse as time goes by.

I would agree as well. Some white smoke cold is normal, especially this time of year. However, you're putting some of the vape-bros to shame with the clouds you're blowing. Here's what I would do. Get a vinyl sticker for your rear hatch that says #DOYOUVAPEBRO? and go until you have the funds to rebuild the engine. It's probably the seal groove in the irons that has eroded out like KNONFS stated above. My S5 NA FC did the same thing when I first brought it home. Now it's in pieces in my garage.

If it is at that point then Ill probably just save up for a while to get the tools and resources to rebuild it myself.
