Stock TII rims or the like? If so no they will not rub. If not stock TII rims, are they 16x7 +40mm offset or close? If so, no rubbing.

Just a word of caution if they are 40mm offset, like the factory. Certain brands will rub. I had Yokohama's that rubbed ever so slightly, ground away a little suspension then ok. I had Michelin's that were extremely wide...Hit before the rim was even flush against the hub.

Was the car lowered? I wouldn't think it would be close, my car has 16x7 with +40 offset with 225/50/16s and its not even close to rubbing.

No, stock '89TII with stock wheels. Some less expensive tires (cheaper) are made with a narrow cross section even though 225 x 50's.Now running Toyo Proxes 215 x 55 and 235 x 50's. I know slightly taller, but wanted to keep OD even (ABS), but fill out wheel wheels. Right now I have polished American Racing Aero's on the car, and they're a few mm closer to the suspension...Hence the 215 & 235.
Just as an example 225 x 50 cross section varies from Dunlop 8.9" to Bridgestone 9.4".As you can see that's .5" (1/2") difference-or 1/4" per side. I looked very quickly at specs on Tire Rack site.

the yokohamas have a 8.9 cross section width. so technically even with a 40mm offset i should be ok, correct?

I'd say yes, they should be fine. A friend of mine had a 10AE with Yoko's that only rubbed during heavy turns etc., but did not rub under normal operating conditions. Sorry, don't know the model of tire.
