I am going to be painting my car in the next month or so, and I was just looking for some good tips on the subject. I am going for the show car look, not the 100 footer look.

 

Fix any damage to the body panels, be sure to cut out ALL rust.

If you have to ask, you are not capable of doing this project. Believe me, I know. I spent 6 months prepping my car for paint and will never go through that hell again.

If you want the "show car" look, pay a pro to do it. Don's **** around unless you have lots of body experience (which it sounds like you don't).

prepping is 90% of the whole paint job. and then 10 % you know painting and drying..
my best tips is to wet sand the whole car with 300 grit then 400 then 500 or what needs to be painted after all damages is fixed,bondo'd and junk.. primer -- then sand again-make sure every thing is all smooth. and rinse out every little crack there is. let it dry, this part is crucial, for there maybe some water still in the little gap. use a blow dryer if needed. if you feel like everything is dry proceed to the next step.
buy at least a pint of grease and wax remover from your local paint store.. you should buy one of those when you buy your paint.. apply with a dry rag all over the car. be carefull not to touch anything after this procedure... let it dry..

now the fun part tape and cover parts u dont want painted on, cover tires/rims. and exhuast system. unless you want that tire/ rims color scheme ****..

almost done... now for painting.. mix the paint as directed. either dupont or ppg. or what ever.
gradually spray evenly with even stroke with a one sec distance left to right motion. then let go of the trigger. and repeat..
do the same with the clear coat.

there is this one trick you can do. to get that car show look in the magazines.car shows. etc.. but its very time consuming. - simply , after the second coat let dry and wet sand again with 2000 grit. not 200. then wash . and then repeat the grease/wax remover procedure. let dry again and if everything is dry. re spray clearcoat.
