Timing question

What is the exact stock timing for s5 T2? My fsm says 5 degrease +- 1 degree atdc? AM I reading this incorrectly? I ask because I have the racing beat dual belt pulley and its mark 10after 0 10 before and 20 BTDC. Ive masked it to five and set my mas the right way my fresh build wont start. I have fuel spark and air but no start. Please help this is annoying.

it's 5 ATDC (-5 BTDC) on the leading and 20 ATDC (-20 BTDC) on the trailing. The stock pulley has a mark for each. For the s5 that timing is only when the engine is in diagnostic mode (initial set connector jumpered). Normally on an s5 the timing will oscillate to stabilize the idle. This is completely normal; almost every engine from the past 20 years does this, piston or rotary.

During cranking the timing should be 5 BTDC for both leading and trailing if everything is hooked up right.

So was I right? whats with the (-5 BTDC)? I find this confusing. Its either after of before.

the stock timing is -5 BEFORE TDC (BTDC). if you look in the manual, mazda always lists 5 AFTER TDC (ATDC). so -5 BTDC and 5 ATDC are the same thing, since its referred to in either or both ways, its just less confusing to list both.

you said " Ive masked it to five and set my mas the right way" but you don't say if you marked -5BTDC or 5BTDC, so its impossible to tell if you're right or not

I think he is referring to the pulley? In that case, the first would be BTDC, and that is the mark you use to set the timing?

Engine must be fully warmed up and the idle well below 1000 rpm.

This is what the pulley marks look like and as i said before The mark ferthest to the left is 10 ATDC the mark to the Right of thet is 0. The next mark over is 10 BTDC. I set my marker in between the 10ATDC and 0. These pulleys dont have a stock time marking. does this explain my situation a little better?
