timing issue

i have a 87 rx7 se that was converted to turbo 2. has rtek 1.7. i tried setting timing from the factory but when i do what the manual says the car runs like crap. i hook the timing light up to l-1 and try to line up the yellow mark and when i do that the car idles like crap and misses. if i back if off it runs better. what kind of timing light do i need? the one i have hooks up to the battery and the wire. is this the right one? the reason i want to set the timing correctly is bc im having a miss hardcore right b4 boost. and somewhat during boost.

Remove the CAS and restab it per the FSM / Haynes manual. There are a couple of alignment marks to guide you. Someone may have messed with it in the past. Your timing light is fine, but you also need to be sure it is idling under 1000 RPM before trying to adjust. Above that point the ECU advances timing on its own.

jumper the initial set connector before putting the light on it.

You should be reading a manual to set the timing anyway. It has this info, but to make it easy, it's a 2-wire green plug next to the leading coil.

take out the bottom rear spark plug and use a mirror to look into the hole. you might need a light as well. turn the front eccentric shaft pulley clockwise until you can see an apex seal in the spark plug hole. you want to make sure that the seal is right above the center of the hole. next, take out the crank angle sensor. take the black cover off of it so that you can see what you are doing. line up the dot that is on the gear of the neck so that it is even with the alignment mark. next, look inside the part where you took off the black cover and notice where everything is lined up inside. now put the crank angle sensor back in being sure not the unalign everything. tighten it back up and replace the black cover. put plug back and re attach the plug wire. the car should fire right up. if not, email me and i will try to explain it a little bit easier for you. bluerotary22@yahoo.com

Your trail sparkplugs are sparking. Yes or No?

Describe exactly where this intital set coupler you jumpered is located in the engine bay. What color, how many wires to it?

RX-7 start and idle just fine and dandy with the trail coils/plugs/wire sitting in the back bedroom or dog house out back.

yes they are. but now i cant get the light to light up off them. its weird the other day it was just fine. now since i jumpered the connector the tach doesnt work and i cant get the timing light to work. its the 2 prong green connector right next to the leading coil.
