Timing Help

HEY WUTS UP PEOPLE??? WELL I NEED HELP WITH THIS RIGHT QUICK. I KNOW THAT ON S4'S YOU NEED TO JUMP THE CONNECTOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE NEXT TO THE COILS. BUT ON THE S5 THEY HAVE A SIMILIAR LOOKING PLUG BUT IT ONLY HAS 1 HOLE. SO I TRIED TO ADVANCE THE TIMING SOME BUT THE COMP. IMMEDIATELY RETARDED IT. SO SHOULD IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE THAT I NEED TO DO ??? HELP NEED TO DO IT BEFORE MOROSO(TOMMORROW).

No. I was just curious. If you try to set the timing above something like 1100 rpm, the ECU will screw you up, because its set to advance the timing around that figure.

I've never experienced what you describe. I also don't put a initial set coupler jumper in either when setting the timing. I know of a number of people who don't use a initial set coupler when setting the timing on a series four. I've done it both ways to see if there was a difference....there is not.

On a series five, you just jumper that one green plug to a ground, essentially thats all you do with the series four. One of its sockets IS a ground wire.

/So you put a timing light on the pulley, with the initial set coupler inserted, then turn the body of the cas till the marks line up, then tighten the cas bolt.......and you say that the timing changes while your doing that?????? Odd.

MARTIN.......Did you ever resolve your strange timing problem???? Did jumpering that single wire connnector(initial set coupler) solve your problem or did something else???

From the FSM...

Note:
To check or adjust ingition timing ground the test connector (Green:1-pin) to the body with a jumper wire.

1. Run the engine until its at operating temperature
2. Turn all electric loads OFF
3. Connect a tachometer
4. Check the idle speed
5. Connect a timing light on the "L-1" high tension lead
6. Check that the marks on the pulley and indicator pin are aligned
7. If they arent aligned, remove the blind cap and loosen the CAS installation bolt and turn it to make thr adjustment.

EDIT: Thought I should add that your idle should be 750±25 rpm
