Unhappy Time to get the ol' turbo rebuilt?

OK, I also have the low/rough idle problem, so I will check for vac leaks this weekend. But I have another problem that I couldn't find any threads about.
My car only has power UNTIL the boost reaches 0PSI. Any boost higher than 0 seems to be parasitic to the engine power. After passing the 0PSI barrier, the boost seems to rise easier than normal and the sound of the spooling is louder than ever(yet no power gain, actually, negative power gain).
Could the vac leak be the cause of both probs(boost and idle)?
If I don't find a vac leak, could a blown turbo be the cause of both probs?

PS. (I don't think this is related, but just in case) When the car is really acting up the temp guage is bouncing around like the needle on a lie detector.

Any advise/opinions are apreciated.

You have multiple problems.
One of them is probably weak grounds.
Another possibility may be clogged cats.
Another - a crack in the TID (that only opens when engine torque pulls against the motor mounts)

Maybe a clogged pre-cat? That will give you the approx symptoms you describe. If not, then take the turbo inlet off and see if the wheel is touching the surrounding material. MAJESTIC is a good place to have a turbo rebuilt. Down in Waco, Texas. Service is Nation wide.

Sureshot, I checked all the engine grounds and made when through the whole procedure to reinforce them. I wouldn't doubt the 'clogged cat' idea. My exhaust is pretty old and I was planning on replacing it soon.
You guys have any recommendations on turbo-back exhausts(I don't have anything for mods yet, and don't plan on going overboard)?
With or without cats is fine, I live in Mi, so I don't really have to worry about emissions too much(as long as there's not visible smoke).

If that doesn't work, how involved is taking off the turbo/inlet?
(I have limited resources here at college and may need to travel to get back to my garage)
I was planning on sending the turbo to Michigan turbo for a rebuild(if necessary), but if a few people would like to 2nd Hailers' recommendation of MAJESTIC, I may have to reconsider.
Any Ideas on price?(for the turbo rebuild or turbo-back exhaust)

Well THAT's an 'above and beyond' answer!
Thanks.
It looks do-able, so I'll check that out this weekend as well.
Also, If I do end up getting a turboback(and thus don't have to worry about any further damage to my cats) I was thinking of doing the Carb cleaner through the vac line trick just before installing the new system...... any thoughts?

Racing Beat might still be on backorder. If it were my car, I'd find someone making a full Turbo-back custom Titanium single exhaust. Go from about 75 lbs for the exhaust down to 10 lbs.

Barwick, I'll take a look, but what are my chances of finding 'Turbo-back custom Titanium single exhaust' for a car as unsupported as the RX? (unless you've already found one, in which case I'll shut up)

LOL, well THAT's not gonna happen for a while!
Any suggestions for a good turbo-back for $1200 or less?

***If that doesn't work, how involved is taking off the turbo/inlet? ****

Take the air filter/afm off. It's just three bolts holding it on. Plus the removal of the electrical plug which pulls straight off. Plus the loosening of the duct to the afm which is just loosening a screw type clamp.

Now the afm/filterassy is out of the way. then loosen the clamp on the inlet duct to the turbo. Gently pull it off and to the side. Now the turbine blades are exposed so you can spin it and see if it's touching the housing when spun.

Just a guess, but if you have the stock exaust from the turbo, there is a pre-cat just behing the turbo. I think that is clogged up and that's why the boost isn't there. Those things cost money. A downpipe from say Mazdatrix is also expensive. I don't think its the cat back that is the cause of your problem. A clogged pre-cat is most likely the cause. I have no cheap solutions.

Yes, there is a cheap solution. Rodding out the pre-cat with a metal pipe, and reinstalling it.

Sure, a cored-out cat isn't the ideal solution, but it's free and that's a good thing, right?
