TII swap

I have the opportunity to buy a TII engine with transmission, harness, and ECU for a pretty good price. The only problem is from the pictures is seems I'll have to have the exhaust downpipe welded back on. Would that be difficult to have done? I'm being told that the engine is from and S5 TII, how can I tell by looking at the engine what series TII engine it is?? Thanks!

if it's an s5 engine it should have a plactic thermostat neck, and the wastegate rod should have a slight bend it it. The knock sensor will be on the front housing above the trailing plug. The downpipe bolts on.... you don't have to weld it to the turbo. For exhaust just look for a turboback bolt on kit, you can find them for reasonable prices if you can't have someone make it for you.

Well I guess Its a S5. S4 have a different message stamped on the intercooler and this fan seems to have 10 puck ( S5) instead of 8 ( S4 )

but gerbraldy is right, look at the wastegate setup, it's maybe on of the most obvious difference! S4 is single, S5 is dual

S5 also doesn't have the twin scroll actuator on the exhaust manifold

don't take this the wrong way but if you don't know that a downpipe bolts on to the backside of the turbo you might not want to try and do a engine swap that requires some wiring difficulty along with mechanical work.

I understand. I do have some mechanical experience but I plan on getting help from the local guys in installing the engine. I wouldn't even think about doing a swap unless I knew I had some serious backup. I have been studying quite a bit about 13b's but haven't touch the exhaust section yet ;-)

Well I knew that modifying the exhaust is an easy way to get more power, just didn't know any details about the exhaust system.... I'm putting the engine in a 90 GXL, only got 63k miles on the car, only cost me $800, the interior is IMMACULATE, the engine has a rotor with no compression. Yes I thought about carbon lock, yes I tried the ATF trick, still no good. I'm buying the engine from a guy who has access to a bunch of japanese engines. I don't know if he's a reseller or wholesaler. I think he buys them from a company in Canada.....

you don't need help from anybody, I've read for 8 months on this forum after getting my first rx7 and I did my motorswap completely (droping engine in etc.) by myself just fine, with the exception of the tons of info I got from this forum. I knew alot about sr20s, 2tc,3tc,4ag's but nothing about rotary engines, just can't rush anything, you will make a mistake so check and check over things again. I've got about $450 worth of tools (including engine lift) and it's everysingle tool I needed to drop it in my car. If you have an s5 car this will be alot easier than swapping that engine into an s4, if you have an s4 car I suggest removing the omp and premixing for simplicity.

Hey you wanna sell me them s5 n/a rotors you have when you tear the motor apart?? just a thought

Thanks. I just bought a basic toolset(I haven't been a paid mech in years, had to get new tools). Going to the store now to get jack stands, jack, creeper, etc. Guess I'll get a lift or rent one..... I was planning on rebuilding the s5 n/a engine...... But I'll keep you in mind if I decide to part anything out!

cool, Northern tools online has decent prices on engine lifts, I drove down to their store in FT.Myers and picked mine up but shipping would be 50$ to ship a lift. Take the engine down to a short block when you get it and get a wirebrush and go over ever inch of it, you can make that engine look brand new. Replace vaccum hoses too, for $15 at autozone you can get 50ft., might aswell do it while it's out of the car instead of having to do it later down the line. I haven't done an s5 swap, I did s4 into s4 but I've heard that it is plug and play for s5 TII swaps, as long as you have the usdm TII harness (for extra length) and TII ecu.

Actually we have a Northern tools store in the next town over. I'll have a look at the prices online. Ok, yeah actually I had planned on cleaning out the engine compartment while it's out. I'll take it out this week and then prep the compartment, buy hoses, order a driveshaft, etc. Thanks for the advice!!!

Well the thermostat neck(from the picture) looks sorta like tarnished brass the then it's black. Is the S4 thermostat neck made of brass?
