TII rearend swap questions

ok i have already searched the forums for this and have come up blank so...........

i have a 88 gtu or gxl(i have not been able to figure it out yet....no markings cause of repainted car and has a mix of options) with a S5 engine swap but i am going to do an engine swap in the future so i am now going to swap in a TII rearend that i have laying around.
but i have heard that everything bolts right up except for the driveshaft. i do not have the money to get a new modified driveshaft but i do have a TII and a N/A driveshaft can i just trade ends on them to make it work???? if not i also have a S4 transmission laying around can i just put that in the car with no problems and be done with it or do i have wiring or bolt-up issues with that path too????

to clarify the situation if i cannot modify the driveshaft my self...... i would like to know if there are any problems trying to attach an S4 TII tranny to a S5 N/A engine???

To use the Turbo trans you would need
Turbo flywheel that matched your motor(S5 na to S5 TII or S4 NA to S4 TII) or aftermarket one with Auto trans. counter weight.
Turbo clutch kit
Turbo slave cylinder(should be on top of trans.)
Turbo starter
Turbo driveshaft
So if you dont have all of the parts it might be cheaper to just get a custom driveshaft made or just extend the NA driveshaft holes and hope you do it right(I dont recommend this way)

I don't think all that is really necessary...

you could probably use the NA clutch, pressure plate and flywheel just fine. you might need a TII slave cylinder and maybe throwout bearing...

I would assume he would already have the starter and the drive shaft.

I know when I did the clutch on my TII someone had put an NA disc on it and a TII pressure plate...

incorrect.

you have to use a TII flywheel as the tranny input shaft is different. w/ a TII fw you need a TII clutch and pp (deinately a pp as the bolting is different but as for the clutch i dont see why you would use an NA one (or how since the splining at the center of the disc is different.)....you also need a TII starter as the engagement is different.. you do need the TII slave as the NA wont go out far enough. in short, the first response was correct.

as long as you stay in your series (S4 or S5) the wiring will be the same as will the mounting. if you go outside of your series you will need the mount specific to TRANSMISSION, not the chasis, and you will end up playing with the sensors/wiring slightly. t/o bearing is the same regardless of aspiration but it is series specific. altho either will work, its best to use the T/O brg specific to the tranny if possible(i.e. if you have an s4 motor and an s5 tranny like me: use the s4 fw but an s5 t/o brg) unless of course you have bought a new aftermarket clutch in which case it will come with one that will fit s4 and s5.

for the ds, you cannot do it yourself (unless you own a driveline shop in which case you wouldnt be asking). the u joints are not replace/repairable. you can take it to a ds shop and have them put the differential end of the tii shaft onto the na shaft and rebalance it (thats assuming you wanna keep the na tranny but put in the TII diff) but honestly, you might as well wait untill you swap in the TII motor to just swap everything at once including the TII ds and diff. there is really no reason why you shoulf need the TII diff in your NA. hell i ran 350rwhp threw my s4 gxl diff (viscous LSD) with NO problems (untill the motor blew haha).

-N/A tranny to a TII rear end you will need different drive shaft, mazdatrix sell them.

-TII tranny to n/a rear end you will different drive shaft ^ differ than the one I stated above, mazdatrix do also sell it.


-TII tranny to a TII rear end - use a TII driveshaft. (basically using all TII driveline components)

-N/A tranny (manual) to a N/A rear end use a N/A driveshaft (manual)

TII tranny to n/a motor and n/a rear end - you will need the following: TII Flywheel, counterweight, Clutch, pressure plate, starter, and driveshaft - mazdatrix parts# (2691-799)

No, besides the driveshaft (called the "propeller shaft" by Mazda) the TII LSD also requires the TII halfshafts (called "driveshafts" by Mazda).

1. Only a professional shop could do this to the degree that the car would be safe.
2. I am not sure, but the driveshaft may not be the correct length with the swapped ends. Therefore, the professional driveshaft shop would probably also need to change the length. See the factory service manual for the correct lengths.

An S4 TII transmission will work with the TII driveshaft, but you will also need a TII clutch & pressure plate, TII starter, TII clutch slave cylinder, S4 TII transmission crossmember, and an S5 TII flywheel.

The NA disk is made for a 1"x22 spline will not fit on the 1"x23 TII spline. I don't know what you had on there, but it was not an NA disk.

Mazdatrix sales the NA trans to Turbo rear driveshaft for $288.20+tax/shipping.
A good used flywheel and clutch kit should run you over $300

So basically if you dont have atleast $300+ to spend on the swap then just leave it alone until you have every thing you need.
