TII hood scoops, WTF?

For some time I've noticed that the TII (US-spec anyway) hoodscoops are offset to the driver side.

Case in point:

I know the scoop fits flush against the intercooler, but one would think Mazda could engineer the intercooler to sit in the middle of the engine bay, thereby allowing the scoop to be symmetrical on the hood.

Oh well, I'm still putting my TII hood on my project N/A.

I just bought a TII hood for my n/a, and it has 2 white stripes over the scoop. Everyone asks why my stripes are off center!

All FC Turbo hoods are identical. That hood you saw wasn't made my Mazda! (unless the photo was reversed). If you have a look at where the IC sits on the engine, it would have been very difficult to centralise it without making compromises. It's just a case of engineering for function before looks. I think it's cool.

Question

So why didn't they just make the hood scoop wider?

I think they should have offset the intercooler as far over as possible. Think about it, air has to flow through the intercooler. What's right under the intercooler - AN ENGINE. At least if they moved it waaaay over some more there would be more airspace underneah it = more air flow.

Putting it more towards the center would make it even worse.

Hey look, Mazda put function before form... imagine that!

Does putting a t2 hood on a n/a help cool it down at all? I've bought a hood and it was destroyed. I just want to see if it's worth the extra $.

the air doesnt go in the scoop, it comes out of it. The air gets sucked in through the cowl then pushed out the scoop. If you look at the aerodynamics of the car, there is a low pressure area just in front of the scoop. The scoop wouldnt really do any good for a N/A. Just look cool.

I believe mazda was trying to make a point.

FUNCTION OVER FORM.

Personally, Id rather have a centered, larger scoop, but its not a big deal to me.

I think our scoop looks a lot better than the Impreza's at least. More gradual of a IC intake, whereas the Scoobys is just normal hood and then a big lip with a hole.

If the air goes in the cowl then goes out the scoop, you'd have the hot air recirculating - the air coming out the scoop would go right back in the cowl.

There's also have to be a duct from the cowl to the I/C... I don't remember ever seeing one of them.

Yeah, they're scoops, not cowls. Cowls face backwards

Why do people make statements like that, like it is the undeniable truth when they have no proof of what they say? If you don't know, phrase your answer in the from of a question, or say "but I'm not positive".

Cowbells? I'm not aware of there being any cowbells on the TII...

Ricier... so do blue led wiper nozzles...., and a bumblebee exhaust.
Anyways, The hood scoop actually REDUCES cooling on an N/A.
The air going into the scoop raises the pressure under the hood- not allowing as much air to flow through the radiator- in through the front of the car.
If the scoop (cow, chicken, whatever) was facing backwards (as some aftermarket hood do), it would create a low pressure zone inside/under the scoop, drawing hot air out of the engine compartment, and actually pulling more air in through the rad.

Ahem- Air going through the rad is a tad beter for cooling than air blowing over the intake manifold and solenoid bank.

Cheers.

BTW- I just hyper-advanced my timing. My hesitation's all gone... weird.
