Tight Brakes
Tight Brakes
I wanted to check out if i could find out why my E brake wasnt working on my 90 GXL and why my FC wouldn't stop from 120+ mph i would start to slow down and by the time i hit 75 i had no brakes. i had to down shift just to get the car to slow down. i tried to pump the brakes and nothing. under normal driving conditions the brakes seem ok but the pedal was hard to push.
when i got home i took of the front tires to look at the brakes. i tried to turn the tires by had and couldn't due it. i litterally had to use a crow bar to get the rotors to spin. my brakes seem to over heat very fast due to the drag my front brakes are producing.
Where do i start. 90 gxl 87,000 miles completely stock, just bought the car. Help would be appreciated.

start by not going 125+ mph with a new 20 year old car car. there could be bolts everywhere that need tightening and theres not much hope in surviving a 125+ mph crash in a small car...
all i can say to do for your brakes is to tune them up. get all new pads. get a big bottle of brake fluid and bleed the brakes well. make sure the fluid is clear and not gray when your done bleeding. you may need a new cylinder or booster. may be faulty after 20 yeasr of use.

for the ebrake.
try tightening the 10mm bolt on the handle under the cover. screw it down and it will tighten the cable a bit. the ebrake isnt really supposed to stop the car above 20mph. anything above will almost be unnoticible.

i did a complete work up on the car right after i bought it changed oils, fluids, greased everything, checked bolts, new fuel filter, spark plugs, filter etc. the car runs beautiful. the pads looked practically brand new and i replaced the brakes fluid as well i got the brakes to free up but there still tight. the cylinder and booster tested out fine. the problem is getting the brakes to release. im loosing power with the brakes trailing like they are, and not to mention the fact i can't stop from high speeds. i uderstand brakes loose stopping power with heat but even after one 120+ mph to under 40 mph pass my brakes are practically gone. as far as the 120 mph crash, just let my worry about that. i just want a fully fuctional FC.
i tighted the e brake bolt under the cover and the hadle gets hard to pull after 4-5 clicks like the manual says it should but even when i cant pull the handle back any more because it gets to hard the car still rolls on level ground

your calipers are about to die then. they can sieze up over time. a full replace will cost you about $350 with core trade for remanufactured brakes. about $70 a piece for the rears and a little more for the fronts.
