Throttle body mod? first gen guys told me to ask here about it.

Someone on the first gen forum suggested a throttle body mod of some sort out of nowhere and told me to come here to ask about it, i tried doing a search and found nothing. He said it'd drastically reduce intake temps, so what is he talking about?

You basically gut the TB of all the BS not necessary for running of the car. This would include the dashpot, thermowax (has coolant lines running to it, holds the idle up until engine is warmed up), secondary throttle plates (I forget if 1gens have these, but all 2gens and 3gens have these plates that do not open the secondary throttle passages until the engine is warmed up), fast idle cam and linkage (part of teh thermowax warmup setup), etc.

I wouldnt fool with it for a 1gen (Im assuming we're talking about an SE). I would get an 86-91 intake and bolt that on instead, using the 2gen throttle body, and perform the mods to tht. The throttle body area of the 2gen is roughly 30-40% more than the 1gen. I have done this swap several times with excellent results.

*********drastically**************88

I think that was the word used. He has a 1st gen. That means its a N/T and if it's like the series four n/t, the secondary set of throttle plates are spring loaded to the wide open position when the engine water temp has reached operating temps. I just doubt removing this set of throttle plates will ****drastically***** lower intake temperatures. Bound to be a touch more airflow with their removal, but somehow I doubt I'd be able to measure it with the butt dyno.

Guys I believe the lower intake temps wouild come from removing the coolant lines to the TB. What that gain is, we dont know, but you would think it would be something.

Personally I think it would be minimal. Yes it would make the TB cooler, but the air is moving through it very fast so wouldn't pick up much heat.

I've removed my #2 secondary throttles and linkages, but I consider the loss of cold-idle too much of a sacrifice, so I've left the thermowax working. I certainly wouldn't bother doing that part of the mod just to get lower intake temps.

f the cold idle, it sucks anyways, you remove some heat by getting rid of the hella hot fluid moving through the tb and you get increased throttle response and maybe 1 or 2 horses from removing the plates

Please explain. My thermowax works perfectly.

I'm glad I took out those coolant lines from the tb. Man was that bottom 90-degree line going to the engine a bitch to get off and put on when I took the UIM off for the first time! I was soo pleased to be able to take that sucker off and bust out with an "office space" on its ***!!! muahahah

Funny thing is, after you've taken it off once, it's really easy to get on and off next time. After the dramas the first time I was dreading doing it again, but it popped off and back on as easy as any of the other lines. There's a bit of a technique to it, but it doesn't bother me in the least.

OK.. here is my experience with intake temps in regards to engine temp anyway.

I did the TB mod and on a 100+ day of HARD driving, my engine temp guage never get even close to 1/2 on the scale.. Last summer with full intake and coolant lines, it would easily exceed 1/2 and get close to 3/4's on a hot day.

I'm not a huge fan of the mod because I HATE the cold start idle death and the lurching it causes, but yes.. I get faster accelleration and better throttle response.

Removing the thremowax and it's lines is not going to affect coolant temps at all (how could it?), only intake air temps.

i know this is an old thread but i have a question. How much of a throttle response gain do you get? my fc is a somewhat daily driver. Is it worth doing this to my car? does it make the car run leaner? thanks -alex

It's hard to quantify throttle response, but I'd call it pleasantly noticeable.

Note that it'll make little difference in throttle response to NA's. Only Turbos have the damped throttles.
