Thoughts on repairing side mirror

Hi everyone,

I have a set of power east bear side mirrors. They've been working no issues until yesterday. In particular the driver side. Yesterday I noticed that the mirror was pointed in towards the cabin more than usual. I used the power switch and it would not move left and right. It did move up and down. When I pressed the mirror with my finger I noticed that it would move left and right freely like it wasn't attached to anything. Moving it up and down it felt like it was connected/attached somehow. When I use the power window switch to move the mirror left and right you can hear the motor working. It seems like the glass isn't attached correctly. Is there a method to remove the glass and investigate on what's going on in there? Any ideas as to how to fix it.

Should I heat the glass with a heat gun so it can pop off more easily?

Screwdriver and pray. I'll give it a shot and investigate the inside.

Progress!!!

I got the glass to pop off without shattering it. First thing I noticed is one plastic stud was missing from the backside and was stuck in the side mirror. I was able to extract it by pressing it out from the backside. Here's the question, what is the best solution to get this tab back on. Anything better than crazy glue? The one that was still on the glass appears to be very weak from the base. Any recommendations to strengthen it?

Crazy glue is probably your worst possible option.
Way too brittle.
If the material is ABS, a solvent type like Weldon would be good, but if you're not sure, an epoxy would probably work.

I was thinking either JB Weld or Loctite epoxy for plastic?

I'm in for the JB weld. If it appears that the threads closest to the mirror where it broke aren't used, build the repair up the first few threads, maybe even second coat.

Will do. My buddy let me have some Loctite Plastic Bonder so I'll probably end up using that and making sure that the tabs are reinforced at the base and don't break with the slightest fart. I'm shocked that over the years no one has had an issue like this with aero side mirrors for the FC.

I reviewed the pics again, any idea on why the part was necked down where it was? I guess, is there functionality to that area?

I'm guessing the plastic studs when inserted allow the mirror to rotate according to the direction you are adjusting. The reason I believe it broke off is due to stress on the studs when cleaning the glass or masking it for paint.
