For those who want speakers in the strut towers...

May I suggest this method?

I have several sets of infinity Kappa and reference 5 1/4 2 way speakers, not wanting to go through selling these speakers and buying 6 1/2 speakers I would have to make brakets for anyways, I came up with this.

We start off with the stock speakers located in the rear strut towers.

This sealed tub I guess you could call it houses 1 4" speaker and internal amplifyer.

To crack this open just remove the 6 philips screws around the tub.

Remove the 4 screws holding the speaker in. I am un-decided wether or not to use the rest of the tub, I will try both ways and report back.

Anyways this is how we want the speaker to sit, so that there will be no interferance with the stock grill.

I used a 4" hole saw to make the hole and then filed the rest of the offending material away.

Installed.

You guys still like my custom fiberglass sub boxes? They have been sitting in storage with the Jl 10w6v2 that goes in them .

the subs are nice... but without them, 4" speakers are worthless...

those speaker tub things were an option not everyone has too...

Nice work I originally went to replace the rears but the new speakers where to deep and hit the suspension controls... so opted not to have any rears but got my twin 12's in the back now and 4 six and half inch's up front, so is more the adequate

Wow I just threw away like 2 sets of tubs too..... They have been stock in 4/5 rx7's I have worked on or owned.

Yes 6.5" will fit, but most the time the brackets are gone or you get these tubs.

Sub boxes are going to be remade and a mold made so I can easily make them.

So if I buy speakers that come with brackets I don't need tubs? ...sorry I know more about cooking and cleaning than I do audio stuff. (That means I don't know crap about audio fyi)

Ok if you car comes with 6" speakers stock, there should be brackets. When you buy new speakers, you use the stock brackets that come with the car, and just replace the speakers.

I will get some pictures of the tubs tommorow .

depending on what sort or 8" you want to put in the speaker depth generally is to large and hits the top of the strut tower so you cant fit it all under the stock grill..

waiting for them pics spyder...have a mock up on paper for something similar and your design looks pretty tight would like to compare.

only diffeerence in my mock up is I have planned the subs to have an angle inwards and up ...otherwise similar to your tub design.

I recently pulled my 2 million pound sub box because the weight was causing a lot of squat on launch and am sorely missing the bass thump.

Stop bein a puss and grow some... in that case, you shouldnt modify your rex at all because someone might think that its nice and steal it... If you are really afraid of gettin jacked, put an alarm on your car and leave it in gear when you stop at a red light...

Nice bro, that looks great. I should look into something like that. Right now I have a 10" going in the spare tire well, but those would work great because I could put my car-puter in the other side that doesn't house a sub.

What are those made of?

Lots of fiberglass and a 3/4 backer of MDF for the sub to screw into.

Pictures will have to wait guys. I cant even go outside, blacked out twice today. Have some migrain thing that the doctors cant figure out. It hurts like hell just looking at my LCD here.

yeah i put infinity reference speakers in my rear shock towers there is a fitment issue even with using the top of the sealed tube (my car had them na na na na na NA!) so i'll be re doing them sometime, i'd liek to put some shallow 8" subs in there ans relocate the speakers i have or something, finding a GOOD place for subs in an fc with sacrificing space is a pain in the *** anyways here pic with my speakers in in case anyone care to see kinda crappy
yes i do have the storage bin frame carpets in now (this beast used to be a 2+2)
rockin the single bin setup

So you have the Infinity speakers in back. How much those run you? What you have up front? I'm thinking of jsut replacing the stock speakers with somthing better, so what would give be best soudn quality? How hard was it to fit those in there?

thos infinity reference 2-ways where on sale at Ultimate electronics for like $79.99 pair, up front i have no clue what i have but i'm guessing Pioneer b/c that what the previous owner loaded this car with Pioneer deck, pioneer 12 dask changer and the old rear speakers where ghetto pioneers, so my safe bet is that the fronts are too, the speakers are pretty good, but the reat of my audio setup sucks and i have no sub so they distort at volume 16 and upwards, if a had a sub and prope amp i'm sure everything would be good, i dunno theyre great for the price, everything else seems to sound shittier than Infinity from what i've HEARD (and the is a noticeable difference)

Good Job! I pretty much did the same thing. I put Infinity Kappa's 6.5" or 6.25" not sure size now, but was able to use the tub to house the crossover and all. Then used the stock RX7 plug set-up for quick removal of speakers to get at my shocks when and if I needed. I had to recess the speaker in the tub a bit, and at the same time tilted the speaker toward the listener (front) a bit. Worked great for me ... never thought was any big deal, was able to keep the stock look.
In the front I used components with the tweeter being mounted flush on the flat spot in front of the side mirror, on the door panel. Works for me.

I some in my towers and they sounded like crap. I know it was a bad install but it was not good at all.

so I cut out holes in my storage boxes and put the same speakers in there and it sounds so good and gets so loud I never put my subs in the car.

unless you can seal off the tower speakers to prevent cone distortion it is a waste. the tower either needs to be sealed or else the speaker needs to go in a container like he did. what is that you used?

just my .02

A full range speaker does not need an enclosure, now if you are *trying* to use them as a bass or even mid bass, then yes you are correct (and even then, a free air woofer can be used).
