For those with a racing beat exhuast

I myself have a RB header, pre-silencer, and cat-back setup on my 86 GXL. My question is this: How LOUD would you say yours is? for example My car was recently compared in volume to a open header civic, I mean it's quiet enough at idle, but when I step on it she really wails. The reason I'm asking is because I'm somewhat certain I have an exhaust leak, the whole car smells like exhuast inside the cabin, it's not overpowering but it is noticable. Just debating if it's worth ordering up new seals and tearing the exhuast apart.

i had a rb header, hollowed cat, and a 3" exhaust back when mine was n/a! she was incredibly loud!! and i had brand new mazda gaskets! but i never had an exhaust smell inside my car! sounds like your gaskets are bad! do you hear a ticking sound near your exhaust manifold??? odds are your exhaust problem will be solved w/ new gaskets...... as for your loudness issue, it will stay pretty loud w/ that header

Header = Loud

There is really no way around that. The stock manifold REALLY quiets things down.

And I actually think (dont quote me on this) the stock manifold added a bit of low end!
However, the header made a huge topend difference ;D

if you keep a catalytic converter in the car, it will qiuet it down alot, also, put a pre silencer on it....... other than that, your pretty much out of luck.... as he put it header=loud!!! also, the smaller tubing you go with, the quiter it will be, but your gonna sacrafice performance for quietness!!

no, it shouldn't be that loud. i have the RB header, catback and have gutted my cat. i also had an exh. leak... you shouldn't be smelling that much exh. gasses and it shouldn't be that loud if you're leak free. i fixed my leak and it was QUIET.

I love the one about getting a better amp haha. I like the loudness, I really don't mind it hell my interior is stripped anyway, I just know that the difference between a car with no exhuast leaks and a car with leaks is a whole lot of noise. So... I'll be ordering those gaskets now. Thanks guys

Headers being loud is a huge misconception. Let me elaborate. If you have loud mufflers and headers, your exhaust will be loud. I, on the other hand, have RB headers to stock main cat to RB catback. It is QUIET below 3k rpm and sounds great above that.

I've got the RB downpipe, precilencer and cat-back and it's not that loud. I've had problems with the nuts that connect the downpipe to the studs in the stock exaust manifold falling off. This makes it a lot louder. I had to put 2 nuts on each stud so that I could tighten them against each other to keep from falling off and that fixed it. If you have a leak you'll be able to hear an unusual amount of noise coming from the area of the leak. I could tell that it was coming from the manifold because the sound seemed to be coming form under the passenger footwell.

I have the full turboback TII RB system. Its not much louder than stock.

I love it.

I am considering the full turbo back RB system. When you say it's not much louder than stock, could you quantify that somehow? For example, if you put both stock and the RB systems on a scale of 1-10, or whatever, where would they be? Or if you're into db . . . !

i have a rb header and silencer going into mystery mufflers (2.75 chromed tips, straight through desing, no markings of any kind???) and mine is actualy pretty quiet. nice deep buzz at idle and and completely acceptable volume while cruising. it get little loud over 4k when im on the gas, but it has a good sound so its not anoying.

its hard to say how much my different mufflers affect this, but its something to consider.

Don't forget that turbos are quieter than NA's. I wouldn't worry about loudness. T2s that are loud are that way because the owner WANTS them to be loud.
