Third brake light ldea...

Just thought of something that Im going to try to do today, thought Id share. Om going to remove the 3rd brake light, and disassemble it. Behind the lens, im going to inset a piece of dark plasice, of vinyl, that Ive cut to have "RX-7" in the cutout. You wont be able to tell in the day, but at night when i hit the brakes, alls you be able to see is Rx-7 when that comes on, I thought it would look pretty cool. Ill post some pics when Im done.

Be very careful with doing things like this...
Most municipal traffic penal codes make modifications like this illegal and may attract tickets.

I've had that idea before. But at the time didn't have an FC. Then when I got one I really didn't remember about that lol.

Just because they sell them doesn't mean it's legal...
Just like all the blue bulbs, projector light conversions, and "Altezza" tailight kits out there...

my car has developed a tad of rust there so i am thinking about having it removed all together and having a piece of metal welded in there. What you guys think?

Thumbs up I like this idea........

and, so long as the stencil doesn' substantially reduce the brightness of the 3rd brake lite, shouldn't be a ticket problem.

Looking forward to the pic to see if the RX7 clearly comes through.

Yea, it looks pretty good. I used an emblem from a 1st gen as my template, so its the curvy letters, it looks pretty sweet.

It's a mandetory safety device. Doing that would be illegal. Even if it wasn't, it's still be silly. They're there for a good reason.

If the car was manufactured with a third brake light, it must still be intact and operational...same with rear wipers and turn signals..at least here in VA

I took the third brake light off of my mustang and I got pulled over numerous times by some real ***** cops and they never said anything about it.

BTW I took it off because it was attached to the luggage rack. (insert puking noise here)

Side note, 3rd brake lights were mandatory in 1986 in the U.S., so all FC's qualify under that rule.&nbsp Technically, you're not supposed to remove or cover them - but it's all subject to interpretation by local law enforcement, of course.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. The third brake light is important since it makes the braking action much more noticable. Especially at night. And what happens if you get rear ended? I can hear the insurance now "well, your high mount brake light didn't work, so you're SOL".

Leave the light. In fact, put a really bright halogen bulb in there like I did to mine.

he's not taking the light out. it will still light up when he hits the brakes, it will just say RX-7 rather than being just the light. i think its a cool idea. its better than putting blackouts on cars like mustangs and camaros do. hurry and get those pics up

Actually, he's covering a good portion of it. The reduction of light will probably be 50%.

But then again it is the 3RD brake light, not the 1st or 2nd. I dont think you would get in too much trouble for it. Im sure a cop could bust your chops though if you had one.
