Question Thinking about buying a TII...

I have my eye on an 88 TII. It has 76k miles on it and it looks really good. Exterior was just painted (guy said the original paint was faded so he had it repainted the same color). Has one small dent on each fender (really cant notice it, unless you look at it carefully) and the interior is pretty good and has a/c. The boost gauge doesnt work and the sunroof doesnt go back (it closes but it doesnt open). Drives really well. Price: $3000. It just passed smog. I checked the engine out and it looks like the guy took care of it. Is this a good deal? Anything I should look for? Thanks.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. Are you new to rotary engines and rx-7s?

As usual, a compression test on the engine from a rx-7 or mazda dealership is good. Just be sure to ask how they do the compression test (as doing it wrong gives deflated compression results).

Yeah that price is about right for CA right now, with that few miles. I might drop what I offer a little if the paint job wasn't a good one or there was overspray on anything.

I also agree with vaughnc though and would consider a compression test manditory of the car was going to be a daily driver.

I heard that if the stock boost gauge doesn't work then that could be trouble as the ECU isn't receiving input on the amount of boost being produced and thusly not compensating with fuel.

I could also be completely wrong, but has anyone else heard this?

I'd have an rx-7 mechanic check it out. If your in california, your local rx-7 chapter / club should have a perfect mechanic in mind for this.

Could just be a loose connection. If you didn't hear detonation when driving it then I wouldn't let it stop you from having it checked out.

Yes, the guage gets its input from the same wire that the ECU does. However, I have a TII and the guage doesn't work about half the time. I have checked the boost sensor (on the passenger side strut tower, on the front), and it is working correctly. Therefore, sometimes you can have a bad guage and the ECU is getting the correct signal. If the guage is good though, it is a sure indication of a problem. To check, meter the brown/red stripe wire on the plug to ground. Under boost, it should read above 2.5 volt, and increase steadily toward 5V as boost builds. If it does this, the ECU is getting a good signal, the boost guage is just broken.
