Thinking about buying 2nd Gen

I am thinking about buying a 2nd generation rx7 and wondered what you guys though I should buy. I have about 7 grand Canadian. Want to use it for daily driver and track use just on side. More of project car. What do you suggest that I get? I should have another car too so it would be mostly a car I would cruise and race on the track with.

I would suggest a S5 GTU or GTUS. If i am not wrong thats the sporty model of the second gen form 89 to 91. They are pretty light have turbo brakes and LSD. And are pretty reliable. And if you have money left you can do a big tune up on the car too. I hope this helps......

Welcome to the wonderful world of rotary. The gen2 RX-7 is a great car to take on as a project. If you want track prowess, go for things like light curb wieght and LSD and a turbo; for street cool, the convertible rules. Check the "what should my car have?" post to find a model with the stuff you want and look for a solid, well-maintained example. With the budget you have, you should be able to get a good car and get it outfitted really well from the start. Happy hunting

The S5 GTU was a base model with wimpy single piston brakes, and no LSD. The 89-90 GTU was really just a renamed 88 SE or 86-87 Luxury. It would be a less than optimal choice.

The Sporter non-turbo models that are often used for racing are the 86-87 Sport, the 88 GTU, and the 89-90 GTUs (note the small "s"). All three would be a good choice for track and autoX racing.

You will want to avoid the Turbo if you are racing as in most racing sactioning bodies, it puts you into the same class as the Vetts and some of the better Porsche models.
