Things that I miss about my second gen
Since having sold the rx-7 I was just thinking back on a few things that when I had the car used to get on my nerves but now I actually miss them.
1. The way it would rev up right when you cranked it.
2. The loud exhaust - most people thought it sounded like **** but I actually miss it
3. The exhaust backfiring got on my nerves but I grew to love it
4. For some reason everytime I got out of any of the rx-7's I had I always smelled like exhaust.
5. I really mis the lightweight feel of the car and how nimple it was on the road turns were always taken a little faster and it didn't feel like I was driving a tank. I always felt like I had total control in the 7.
Just thought I would post it and show some love for the second gens. I would love to have a really nice TII sitting in my garage one day.

As this is *the* place to get advice when we have problems or lend people a hand, we may sometimes only see the problems and forget how great these cars actually are, especially considering their age and how hard we sometimes drive them.
After eleven years, I still get chills sometimes in anticipation of a drive in my 7. You miss them when you don't use them as a daily driver.

Standalone? 'Cuz... without emissions, with premix, on the stock ECU, even with a SAFC-II, things are a bit interesting coming out the back end. I'd never consider running a 'vert without a cat, that's for sure.
A friend of mine always told me I "smelled like car" whenever I'd been in the '7 for a while. She liked it, though. One of those unique "Russ" things.

I'm sorry but any motor with a large amount of overlap is going to at the very least have a pretty dirty idle, without cats that is going to stink.
Peripherally ported exhaust does that, further ported engines make it even worse. Tune it all you want, idle is going to reek without a cat. The amount of unburned HC's goign into the exhaust will reduce as RPMS climb, but rotary idle will always be filthy unless you have a stock port MSPRE.

Might be a bit of a long trip though...The idle is actually quite pleasant. Only a faint aroma of gasoline is detectable if you put your nose right by the tailpipe. When standing behind it, you would be hard pressed to find much in the way of the "typical" smell. Under cruise I've tuned it quite lean as well, which not only makes for decent fuel economy (on the highway anyway) but a much nicer smell.

Under boost of course it's a different story, but even modern cars stink under full load.
I wish my video camera had Smell-O-Vision so I could record it.
Ive had at least one 2nd gen 7 in my driveway since I bought my first one in 1993.
I've grown used to having one but since my Turbo Vert is for sale I know its really going to hit me hard when the new owner takes it away. Ive owned the convertible for 12 years.
I think I'm going to miss the look of Mustang and Z-28 owners when you walk them on the freeway - in a little Mazda ragtop.

I used to spend about 10 hours a day in mine (delivered pizza's) and i'd still want to get in it and drive to the store or do whatever for my gf just to drive it. I never get tired of the "7" and always find a way to have fun in it.
i remember not driving it for 8 months while I worked on it then getting inside and scaring myself (that weird feeling in your guy as you boost in 3rd all the way to redline) then blowing the turbo a month or two later. Still waiting to see if I can make myself shart when I get it running with a new turbo next month.
CAPN: may I steal the last part of your sig? As you can see I have a thing for stupid people.

Of course as long as you do not betray they saying.

Here's another quote for you. Its in relation to computers, but still is very true:
"Every time someone makes a better program, the world makes a better idiot"

Any drives over 30 minutes and I always come out with a bad headache. Of course, my manifold is cracked and I have a real bad exhaust leak, but that's getting taken care of soon.
Anywhere within 10 feet of the car outside when it's running and you will smell gas. What else would one expect from 12mpg. Haha.

I donno what I'm going to do... Try and narrow it down I Guess with starter fluid..

Yep. Even with brand new engines, fuel systems, and exhausts, these things just always reek of a fuel\exhaust smell that kinda gets on you.
