Things to do while the motor is out?
As the title says, I have a na S4, motors outta it and want to take car of anything i should while its out. Ideas? Dont have the time to pay the bay(wish i could), not worth doing a wire tuck atm, gonna be doing a t2 swap someday, so yea. lol. Ideas are nice.
If you can't paint the bay I'd at least take a dremel/drill with a wire wheel attachment to the engine bay and clean the crap out of it. I did a half-*** de-greasing with some engine brite that didn't do ****. I wish I had painted the bay or stripped the paint off it at least to get rid of the scratches.
+1 clean clean clean....very good advice. I've put several hours into my engine bay. I couldn't stand putting a $2500 engine into a crappy looking engine bay, that's just me though!

0000 steel wool and this:

Don't bother with a dremel and wire wheel unless you want to spend an eternity on every square inch and scratch the paint in the process. Goo-Gone will cut right through any grease and dirt and without harming the paint. I stopped buying engine dregreaser when I found this stuff. You don't have to worry about getting it on wires or anything else. Squirt the Goo-Gone on the steel wool pad and go to town.

Steel wool?
Isn't that a bit harsh on the paint?
I'm fond of Purple Power and a stiff (but not abrasive) paint brush.
Consider the brush to be sacrificial and you can get into just about any nook or cranny.
Lots of hot, soapy water followed with plain water to finish.
With the engine out, it'd be real easy to replace the fuel filter and soft lines.

0000 is ultra fine. With a light touch and some polishing compound you can use it to clean your car's paint. Using 0000 and Goo-Gone, there's little need to scrub. Just get the area wet with it (or squirt it right into the pad) and firmly move the pad in small circles. It's amazing how well and how fast it works. Finish by wiping with a clean rag. This technique also works great on the engine, air pump, a/c compressor, you name it, and it'll shine when you're done.
The wire wheel attachment I speak of is in the top right corner of the attached pic, silver worked for me but I suppose the brass one could work as well but require more work. The attachment (which is probably roughly 1" diameter) on a drill beats the crap out of going to town on the bay with a brush or some steel wool, lol..and obviously spray the bay with degreaser before you use it.
I cleaned my engine bay today with shop rags, Purple power and a pressure washer
.
Pressure washer is serious business. It stripped a couple sections of paint. They will be hidden though.
I saturated the bitch with purple power, Scrubbed everything I could with a sponge, sprayed more purple power to keep it wet and wiped off as much as I could with the shop rags.
Pressure washed it to get all the grime and other stuff out of the way, Sprayed more purple power ontop of the water. Let it sit...Sprayed MORE purple power and **** just started running off
Then pressure washed it again.
Tough spots just required more purple power (lol redundency) and another pressure washer session.
No road grime or grease can stand up to the pencil thin beam of a 1500psi pressure washer yo.

lol I guess ill be cleaning. Already did some of that when i first pulled the motor. Im keeping PS so im not gonna de power the rack lol. And i guess i can clean the oil cooler grooves. Keep the ideas coming!
check yellow pages for a detail supply house, purchase engine degreaser from them and use it with a less then 2000psi pressure washer.
It will work wonders. I suggest green engine wash from auto magic if you have a auto magic dealer in your area. It wont stain anything and you can even use it diluted to shampoo carpet.
what color is the bay?
