I was wondering the same thing about the heat shielded ones. However after thinking about it I'm just going to get some tubing and make a cai that goes to the front of my car like some others have done. I like this way better because close to the wheel where rain can get is not good for cars in louisiana where it rains 2/3 of the year

I could actually see some legitimate applications for that heat shield in an RX-7. For example, you could mount it sideways to help keep most of the hot radiator discharge air from the filter in some instances, depending on your setup. Also, you could use it as the top cover for a CAI system. The shield mounts pretty close to the filter, so I'm not sure if that would be the best thing for a high-hp TII engine with a single turbo that is going to need the whole filter body, but it would create no problem whatsoever for an NA street engine. The price seems a bit stiff, but stainless steel, fabrication, and polishing are not cheap in the US, so it may be worth it to those who can't make one themselves.
