thermostat housing crack...ideas?

my car started overheating so i pulled over and behold.....my thermostat housing has a thin crack along the seam that runs up the middle of the housing. so i put some quick steel on it, let it dry overnight and the antifreeze made it peel right off......it feels a little brittle when it dries, maybe quick steel sucks. then i put some clear epoxy stuff on it and it leaks through that as well......any ideas of what to use temporarily until i can go to the junk yard for one.....thanks

Nothing will work to seal it.

BUT

If you are going to try a temp. fix, drain all the anti freeze (or enough so its not sitting in the crack) and clean it throughly, then "V" the crack slightly with a die grinder, and epoxy your heart out.

Nothing is going to "work" well though. Just slow it down is all.

I'd make the junkyard trip sooner rather than later

I had the same problem, just bought one from mazdatrix eventually after trying various epoxies and sealants. I have a thermostat housing that I will sell you for $30 shipped, it is off of an S5 N/A.

Do you mean the waterpump housing, or the neck the water hose comes off of?

Or buy a plastic one and be done with it for as long as the original one lasted, which is probably longer than the rest of the car's life.

1. JB weld does not work
2. Buy the metal one just because it's a better part. metal>plastic/fg
3.the MAZDA piece costs ~$106 the Mazdatrix Piece costs ~$126
4.S4 does not fit the S5 (different bolt patterns)

your better off just replacing it... just find someone parting one out... anything you do would be a quick fix and wouldn't last long

not totally sure on bolt pattern but do beleive its true but also S5 is recessed thermostat (flush with housing and with O-ring style gasket) and S4 is used with just paper gasket with just 2 bolts????

when putting it back in, use some wide washers. this will guarantee a flush bolt on due to the fact that the cylinders on the neck sometimes comes loose and can cause leaking.
