If you stare at it, you'll see that it's supported by two "legs" on the top and the bottom.&nbsp Get a pair of wire cutters and cut all four of them.&nbsp The center core should fall out.&nbsp Put the flange back into the thermostat housing...

The spring falls off with the "core" once you cut all the legs off.

That's it!&nbsp That's how you "core" a stock thermostat.&nbsp You just end up with the metal flange on the outside.

The other option way is to drill holes around that metal flange, but I've found it's a major pain in the *** to do that!

BTW, my thermostat has been cored like that, and I've been running it in my car for the past year or so.&nbsp Yes, the car runs too cold sometimes, but once it warms up to operating temp, it never goes below 180F, unless ambient temps are stupid low like under 40F.

Why did I do that?&nbsp I had an overheating problem, and I didn't have another replacement at 1AM in the morning...

I never bothered to replace it since...

You know what's funny...&nbsp I actually have a stock Mazda thermostat sitting in the box on my desk...

Hell, Vegas just started hitting 90's again - no need for a thermostat!

It's not just overheating you should be worried about. You want your engine to warm up as quickly as possible to minimise engine wear, emissions, fuel consumtion, etc. Only a working thermostat can do that.

The fan and the thermostat perform two totally different functions, you need them both. You needed a 'stat when you had a mechanical fan, why wouldn't you need one with an electric one?
