Test Lights for TPS and ECU-how can I tell which is positive and negative?

Followed the various write ups to make test lights for TPS and ECU codes, but I was only able to get Radio Shack LED's that have 2 black wires. I can get the LED's to light either way I attach wires to a battery. Does it matter which 2 I connect for the positive to make the positive lead? Thanks.
