Is the temp sensor under the oil filter?

My Temp gauge might be misreading, so I want to change it with an aftermarket gauge.
When I bought an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, it came with a sensor. I only had to remove to stock sending unit and replace it by the sensor that came with the gauge.
I know I can have mechanical and electrical gauges, what will be the difference in the installing process between both? Is the stock temp sensor the one under the oil filter? Do I have to keep the stock sensor or I have to replace it with an aftermarket one?

Thanks.

Yeah, it's roughly under the oil filter. It's down a bit low though. I forget whether it's below the spark plugs. It's a brass piece that you have to unscrew to get out.

I thought mine was misreading on my last RX-7 but it turns out the needle jumps really fast between 180 and 205. It read 3/4 at 205. The thermostat is set to 180. I wouldn't recommend it in the long run but my last RX-7 hit 3/4 about 50 times without any problems whatsoever. Real overheat comes at 7/8.

You must have an S5. I wonder what section on the stock gauge corresponds to what temperature on an S4.

So the normal operating is 180 F? At what temperature is it dangerous for the engine?

The thermostat starts to open at ~180degF and is fully open at ~200degF. Normal operating temp is 185-195degF depending on load.

Most aftermarket temp gauge senders don't fit in the stock location; they're too big.

Here's what I did with mine:

Thanks NZ, your link was really helpful! My first idea was the replace the stock sensor with the aftermaket one; as I did with the oil pressure sensor. I guess I'll just have to drill a hole.

What do you think is the best option, to read water or oil temp? The stock gauge reads oil temp no?

The stock gauge reads water temp. Knowing both temps is ideal, but water is more important.
