Temp question for the Gurus
Temp question for the Gurus
Hey guys,
I messed around with a modded Integra GSR on the way home from the office on the parkway and noticed my coolant temps rose a bit during the "race". My NA with all the possible NA trimmings usually runs VERY cool temps (just less than 1/4 on the gauge) and we did a bunch of 60-110 runs through third and fourth gear. When I glanced at my gauge the temps were noticeably higher, a little over 1/4 (never went above that) but WAY less than halfway. Outside temps were about 82 and once I slowed to normals speeds and glanced back the temps were normal again. Are the rises in temps something to be concerned about or is it just the result of a couple minutes abuse on a warm day? the coolant is full and only 1 year old and when I came home everything checked out ok, no drips, no coolant smell or spray and no bubbling.
I have the following engine mods on the car:
2.5 inch downpipe/racepipe w/ apexi dual dunk catback
K&N cone
UR pulley, RB 11 LB flywheel w/ centerforce DF clutch
no emissions, wired 6 ports
P.S. I hope he got a kick outta the flames, cuz thats all he saw

get an aftermarket temp gauge! Oh for the love of god get an aftermarket temp gauge! Overheating is a leading cause rotary deaths. The stock gauge is not good enough to tell if you are really overheating.

By "below the thermostat" do you mean opposite the stock thermosensor, like HENRX7's install?

It's the one with the red crimp on it.  The thicker wire is an extra ground wire.

Yup, thats where HENRX7 put his (matter of fact, I think you told him to put it there...
) but that was from another post I looked at tonight... it's all kinda blurred together right now (matt needs sleep!)
Thanks again!

and, as if it mattered now, here is the original post https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=16203
everything seems ok, I was just wondering if it was normal for the temp gauge to move a bit when racing on a warm day...it's really only happened once or twice, the other time was during a 100 degree day...
when I'm hard on the car around town it's solid at it's VERY COOL running temps (rad. cap and water neck is new too, 1 year old) but on those 60-110 runs with third and fourth constantly being redlined I wanted to know if a lil gauge movement was ok. I would imagine it's tough on the cooling system on a warm day (as well as my brakes hee hee)

Hm... make sure everything is working okay, including your thermostat, I had to change mine, and it fixed the problem..then again I was overheating pretty bad.
Oh, and what are the best aftermarket temp guages you can buy?

Everything looked ok, full o water, thermostat is only 6k old (only put 6k on the car this year). The rad cap was a tad loose though and would loosen a lil after driving (pep boys ****). So I put on an OEM mazda one I had that came with the new waterneck I got last year. Why I didn't put it on then is beyond me. This one has stayed real tight all day and although I didn't make third-fourth gear redline runs today, she stayed ice cold all day. Perhaps that cap was crap (rhymes hehe) and under the load of racing couldn't take the pressure and loosened?? sound far-fetched?? who knows...all this was over the gauge moving just a tad the other day, but I always like to know WAY ahead of time of any future problems with this car...as we all know their sensitive and easy to destroy if problems go unchecked. I'm confident all is well though, I think I just worry too much
As far as aftermarket gauges I like to stick with the big three, HKS, Greddy, APexi...I've been more than satisfied with their gauges in all my project cars. I have a Greddy silver faced EGT in my car (lights orange to match) though HKS makes a series of black on orange that look IDENTICAL to our stock gauges. HKS is $$ though and my cost at the shop is much better on Greddy. Thanks for all your thoughts!!
