Temp problems

I just drove to the store (2 miles) let it sit for about half an hour then drove home and on the way to the store my temp gauge kept going up and down as if it couldnt tell the temp then on my way back it stalled out twice but the temp was normal so i didnt think much about it but then when i pulled into my driveway the temp gauge was all the way at the top any ideas what it could be

I'd check the thermostat first.

this raises a red flag to me. before you change the thermostat (if you do, GET OEM) leave the rad cap off and let it run for awhile and see if you get bubbles

Could it be getting air in the system from a leaking radiator cap because i just noticed a little bit of coolant under the cap

being thats the case, no that isn't to bad if the body is in good shape

don't go transplanting rad caps, air only gets in the system by removing something major, a leaking rad cap doesn't let air into the system, but a bad cooling jacket or oring sure does

just take your rad cap off, start the car and let it idle for about 1/2 hour and watch the coolant here and there, if you start getting bubbles constantly that doesn't stop, start saving some cash

It hasnt overheated since but it was raining hard when it overheated and i had a belt start squeeling and it hasnt stopped since idk if it overheated due to that belt slipping or if there was air in the system and the car is in pretty good condition perfect paint except the clear coat peeling on the trunk the windshield was cracked the top is torn a little and the mirror was broken i already replaced the mirror and windshield just waiting for the top because i want to try and do it myself but i cant find any information on how to take the old one off

Have fun with the top, they are NOT fun if you've never replaced one before

I tried helping my buddy replace one on a 67 chrysler years ago, he said screw it and brought it to a shop after messing with it a couple days

most places near me stopped replacing convertible tops so the places that do replace tops charge a lot of money
