Temp gauge, idle and stalling...

I replaced the radiator a while back and for a while my car was running fine. But lately after being driven for a while it starts idling erratically when I stop, sometimes even stalling when I come to a complete stop. Also while I'm driving I notice the temperature gauge shooting up hot for a good 5-8 seconds then it returns to the middle. I checked the hoses to see if there was any leak, but there isn't any. Although they seem kinda squishy..(was just wondering if that's normal) 'cause I figured if they had coolant in there, they'd be a little tense? so any help on what it could be?

Thanks,
Esmeralda

The temp sensor is on the engine block below the oil filter. If the wire is frayed/grounding out, it'll show full hot when it touches bare metal.

As for the weird idle, clean the BAC valve and adjust the tps. Also, search for vacuum leaks, set the engine rpm, then check timing. These are the most common reasons for weird idle.

You can also check for vacuum leaks. It is possible.

Not to sound like a know-it-all... It sounds like you have a couple little issues here. Nothing too serious yet. Make sure ALL your wiring is in good condition. Then make sure ALL your vacuum hoses are "healthy" (not hard/brittle, broken, missing and make sure they're the right size). BAC valve is probobly the biggest problem because it's probably the most expensive (find another one and swap it to see if it changes anything.) Hope this helps a little...

Thank you. Yesterday it wouldn't start for a little bit, until after about an hour it did, so I took it my mechanic. But today I get a phone call and he says he doesn't know a whole lot about rotary engines, after replacing the spark plugs from a couple weeks ago when my car also failed to start. And now I'm stuck trying to find another mechanic. I can't let this car go though, as many headaches as it gives me, it'd be a heartache if I sold it.. can't do that. Just need a little guidance.

Sounds like a **** poor mechanic. I never gave an excuse like "I don't know a whole lot about those." At my shop, we'd fix anything, from the most common Ford, to emergency vehicles, and weird stuff like old european cars that nobody's ever heard of. I've seen some WEIRD systems before. All it takes is a little reading the FSM and you can figure it out.

Anyways, try this to see if your coolant seals are blown. With the engine cold, pull the radiator cap and run it for a short bit. See if a significant amount of bubbles start coming up. If so, you've got blown coolant seals and need a new engine. If not, go to your local parts store and get a compression gauge and check compression.

Start there and tell us what happens.

AGreen, I didn't get any bubbles, I'll be sure to check the compression and clean the BAC valve. It'll just be a couple of days before I actually can because my car is in a storage a couple miles from where I live. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks so much.
