Tell me about clutches.

I have a pretty new OEM one that slips too much. I am looking at a Centerforce Dual Friction one. I like it because I can get it for about $255 and it gives me 90% better holding power. What does everyone recommend in the way of better clutches for around $300? Thanks.

I've heard good things about this setup...

Bönez Street-Comp Clutch (Non-Turbo) $329.99

CL500102 Clutch Bearing Kit (release bearing, pilot bearing, seal. Fits all - 86-88) $36.96

That's at http://www.rx7.com

all i can tell you is that i got the stock replacement clutch from RP and it slips pretty badly but it was only $200. i think you get what you pay for w/ clutches and from what ive heard thats a pretty decent one. but hopefully someone w/ it will respond.

There is the ACT clutch set for less than $400 at another company other than the rx7store. I have the ACT set (with 9.5# flywheel) and I love it. My car had the CFDF before and I never really cared for the feel of it.

What is the difference between the feel of the ACT and the CFDF? What did you not like about the CFDF? Thanks.

I have heard a LOT of bad things about centerforce. My friend had one in a 94 accord and it came out a year later, in fact I had to replace it.

Someone on the FC3S list just installed one adn said it is ****, and theyre taking it back out for an ACT if i recall. I dont have any personal experience, but for another $100 and my time it'd be worth it go with ACT, what EVERYONE recommends

I went with the Racing Beat Heavy Duty Street/strip setup, which is right around $300 for the clutch disc and PP. Check out my writeup: Clutch Job

If you are looking to go with an ACT clutch I recommend you check out the group buy section. Jason is doing a Group Buy on ACT clutches, very nice prices. Better hurry, I'm not sure how long it will go for.

I had the standard clutch kit for over 3 years. It was fine on the street and endured ~40 autocrosses before I sold the car and never had a problem chirping in second gear.

The one thing the clutch was not good for was drag racing. If you slipped the clutch too much on a launch, it wouldn't clamp real well until it cooled back down.

The CFDF felt too soft and didn't feel too direct (different speed, different clamping force). The ACT is nice and firm and feels the same at all speeds. I'm not saying the CFDF couldn't hold the power on my practically stock '89 T2. If could. I just like the feel of the ACT over the CFDF. It's all subjective. If you have the luxury of trying out different brands of clutches (especially if you know people with cars like yours), go for it.
