tcu problem? involves start up smoke

alright. so heres the issue. when i turn my 86 NA over, fresh street port rebuild?, it idles very low and tries to die on me. I ussually feather it up to 9 or 1k and keep it there for a minute. at this point there is no smoke coming out the back whatso ever. after a couple moments, it varies from time to time, i can feel and hear something kick on. im assuming its the tcu because at this point i can let go of the throttle and itll idle it self very smooth. the issue here is that when it kicks over it starts to smoke out the back alot, and consistant. the smoke does however die if i drive the car around for 2 minutes or so. i ussually rev it up a little bit and itll blow some smoke out the back and be done with it. my Oil Metering Pump Linkage is bent right now and so the oil gates are wide open even when im not on the throttle. i also have a SAFC which i havent touched but it has been set by the previous owner. im running compression tests right now which are coming up okay. as a side note when i ran my compression tests fuel came up into the gauge and sprayed out, definately flooded. im wondering if this is possibly leaky injectors? any thought and input will be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time, nick.

hmm

have you done a compression check? im hoping its not a bad coolant seal, i am losing coolant, i had a leak on the hose connecting to the engine but fixed that. i guess it possible its leaking somewhere else... anyways though, let me know if you find anything out on it.

I was told it was an internal coolent leak. I was also told by the same person it wont do much more damage than it has already caused if i drove it. So i dunno. I haven't done a compression test yet.

tcu?

uhh. i definately got the name wrong. TPS? the part which you have to adjust in order to adjust your idle. the reason i think it has something to do with this is because the idle is rough at first and idle very low, i have to feather it, but when whatever it is kicks on the idle goes up and it idles fine. however. today i had an issue with it and when the tps? kicked on, the rpms actually dropped and the car stalled out. several times. i was able to get the idle running properly by driving the car around the block and revving some smoke out. also if i rev too high before the idle kicks on properly the car will backfire, ive learned to keep it under 2.5k for a few moments, than rev it up to clear some smoke. again, any advice would be awesome. ive only had the car for about 2 months and am tryin to fix some issues... and twiztid240, as far as the internal coolent leak. im assuming he means a coolant seal is bad, engine got too hot. this is definately a probability as i am losing coolant and not sure where....thanks again for any help

Yeah its a bad seal. That would explain why your losing so much coolent have you changed your oil recently?? I would change the oil and run straight water in the rad. and check that way. I havent done that yet due to the fact im still tryin to get my throttle cable holder back on right. The petal wont pull it as of right now. Also if someone could take a pic of how the spring throttle cable holder and the other pieces it would be very helpful. Sorry for the thread jack...

oil change

yeah i havent changed the oil since i got the car, couple months ago. i do however top it off all the time as it burns oil quick, especially since my OMP linkage is rigged to pump mad oil in. im a little confused though because she starts up no problem, but when i let go of the clutch she dies, or if the tps or whatever kicks on itll die even if i rev it. any help would be awesome. im gonna buy a new engine, and i bought a new car. but if i could keep this thing running just to keep the fluids moving around and such thatd be great. thanks again for any help.

Its possable the TPS could be going out. Thats another issue my car has. As a matter of fact its the exact same issue of which you speak of. Try unhooking the the TPS, not from the throttle body but from the connector. And see if there is any change. IF not that is more than likely the culprit
