t2 question

hey guys i am new to the tubo world just bought my first turbo car lastnight. i am used to a first gen so i could use some good discriptions. i will try my best to explain.

last night i bought a t2. it will crank start run for 3 to 5 seconds and no matter what you do it will die. it has 98 psi in the front and 92 in the rear. the turbo does spin and the bearings are in good shape. the rats nest has been removed how good i dont know and the egsaust has been steright piped as well as the air pump has been removed agina i dont know how well. as fas as i can see its still on the motor with the belt remover and the hose has been cut and sealed with electrical tape.

sorry for the newb explination but agian i am new to the turbo so try not to flame to much . any help would be much appreciated and i will answer and questions to the best of my ability.

o and i dont know if this makes a difference or not but it has as single pipe that is missing an egsaust donught. i dont know if that changes anything and as fas as i know the ports are wired open. thanks

Maybe AFM issue. I had a similar problem where my TII motor would start and then just quit. Turned out I was using the wrong AFM. While I figure you have the right AFM, bad wiring or a faulty AFM unit might cause an issue. Just a thought.

You can check it with a meter to see the resistance between pins if I remember right. I think the info should be in the FSM. Their is an online copy you can download. I can't remember the link off the top of my head.

So when you found out it wasn't plugged, you just connected it without testing, right? Test it to make sure you didn't fix one problem and create another one...definitely sounds AFM related.

When starting, fuel pump power comes from starting signal to ECU to Circuit Opening relay. When the engine starts and moves the AFM "flapper", it creates continuity for the fuel pump. When the engine stalls, the fuel pump turns off. Before you plugged it in, the engine was running off the fuel pump pressure created by the starting signal.

alright guys i have checked the AFM and its in spec i have tried changing it. with no luck it still just starts and dies right away. i had my dad hold the flap part way open still no effect. i think i have solved one problem like you said. the air flow meter was unplugged and the car would run for 5 seconds now it just starts and dies. what is next?

Fuel pump relay not hooked up right? Just another idea. When I switched to a Microtech standalone and had my fuel pump relay hooked up improperly, it would start fine and then die right after I let the key go to the run position. It sent power to the fuel pump when cranking, but cut voltage off when the key went to run so it got fuel to start, but went dry when you let off the key.

you getting plenty of fuel?

Your injectors are ok?

Your fuel filter is not clogged?

Your fuel pump getting the correct voltage?

You fuel pump still working (maybe the previous owner ran out of gas enough times to kill the pump?)

You have NO vaccuum leaks?? (double check to make sure the rats nest removal was done right.)

Do yourself a favor... Check the easy stuff first.

1. Make sure you have NO vacuum leaks and that the intake system is intact from the AFM back...

It does have gas in it right? Also there is a troubleshooting section in the FSM

+1 to the FSM.

so, if it has FUEL and SPARK you should be looking at VACCUUM LEAKS OR BAD COMPRESSION. Get to it already.

Wait a mintue...I'm in the process of blocking off emmisions and I was under the impression that the car wont hold an idle on its own for about the first 5-10mins. He did say the rats nest is removed right?

It also sounds similar to an issue I was having with a bad afm. Is your afm level or at least somewhat level?
