T2 driveline conversion

Ok, I know that some of this has been beaten to the ground, but i need some clarification. ok, my na trans is about dead. I want to swap to the T2 trans. here are a list of things I know i need:

T2 flywheel
T2 clutch
T2 trans
T2 starter

ok, for right now I want to keep my gxl rear end. so heres my question, what driveshaft do i need?? I know that the transmission side of the driveshaft is differnt from the na driveshaft, but what about the side that bolts to the pinon flange of the diff? I know that the T2 driveshaft has a different bolt pattern, but how different? can i just drill out the holes on the driveshaft and diff a little bigger and use bigger bolts, or is the bolt pattern on the T2 driveshaft completly different from the gxl rear end?? also, what about the auto driveshaft?? I have *heard* of this working, but does anyone know for sure? The auto driveshaft would have to have the more/bigger splines for the t2 trans and the same bolt pattern on the pinon flange as the na diff, can anyone verify this?? I dont want to take the whole car apart, just to find out that i dont have the right parts!!

also, what about the trans from 89-91? are they the same as the 87-88 t2s trans?

Thanks for all your help!!

the 89 t2 trans is basically the same. the only other thing you left out is the drive shaft, if you want to leave the n/a rear end then you need an at drive shaft. or you need to redrill the flange on the n/a rear, im not 100% sure you can do that though, ive never done it

You are correct. The flange on the TII driveshaft has a different bolt pattern.Mazdatrix told me the auto driveshaft will work.It has the larger splines that fit the TII tranny and the n/a pattern on the flange.Only problem I see is my workshop manual shows the auto driveshaft as being a little shorter by maybe1/2 to 1 inch so I don't know if it works or not.Only other option is to have a custom one made.

Well I am very interested in installing a T2 trans in my na. There must be someone who has done this and knows exactly what is needed. Is the wiring for the starter the same? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

From my talk with Mazdatrix, they said they could have one made for me. They did not mention the automatic option. Shame on them. But what the deal is, is that the one they can make for you verses the Mazda stock one, is that the one they can make for you has replaceable u-joints. The stock don't have replaceable u-joints. Frankly you can have a local driveshaft shop make the same driveshaft for you without the shipping costs. Going turbo with my n/a some day soon.

You would need the TII starter because the TII tranny and flywheel is bigger than the N/A one. The N/A starter won't line up with the TII tranny to turn TII flywheel.

I once asked Mazdatrix about the TII tranny swap and they also told me that the A/T dirveshaft would work. I would be concerned about the strength of the A/T dirveshaft though. Since the point of the TII tranny is a stronger dirvetrain, it seems silly to use a driveshaft that can't take the stress of abrupt clutch engagements, hard shifts, burnouts, etc. Now maybe the A/T driveshaft is indeed strong enough, but I would want to find out first. Perhaps having Mazdatrix supply the dirveshaft would be a better option if it is stronger.
