T ii hood or not to tii hood that is the question, just for discussion purposes
I am bored and wanted to start a general discussion, I have a 1987 na base model that I am thinking about putting a T II hood and spoiler on, my car is red and I was going to carbon fiber wrap the hood, and paint the spoiler to match.
What are you guys thoughts, I was going to do it for DGRR this year. But I cant make up my mind.
Anyway this is just a discussion for everybody's thoughts.

FCs always look better w/turbo hood + spoiler. But I wouldn't do it to an N/A car because my engineering mind would hate having a non-functional hood scoop. The s4 turbo mirrors would be a good addition as well.

I agree with the non functioning part. It has always pissed me off when manufactures put dummy scoops on vehicles. That being said and to contradict myself I thought about making something to block off so that it atleast doesnt let alot of water in when it rains. I would hate to have a open water way for the top of my engine. I also agree that the turbo 2 style looks great. But I also like the slick look. I am so torn between what I want to do. I feel like when my wife tells me she hungry but cant tell me what she wants to eat, make up your mond woman. Tell me what I want to eat LOL

The dirty engine point is a valid one. Lots of wear and tear on your electronics and rubber by letting elements in when unneccessary.

The spoiler might be alright (although it would really only be for style and not for function) but having a non functional hood scoop is ricey. Adding a gaping hole in the hood to produce zero gains and dump dirt onto your engine seems like a bad idea to me.

usually i could tell if a car was non turbo, i would ask them if it was turbocharged just to make them feel bad and rethink their decision and then say "nice GXL" (or whatever else you spot) though as i pointed to the badges that gave it away.
you know, like the guys who put those turbo stickers on their non turbo cars and whistles up their tailpipe.
it is a valid question here though, the turbo hood does give the car a meaner aesthetic look. but putting a turbo hood on a 4 lug base model for example, doesn't do you or your car any service. i spot things like that in a millisecond and then the eyes roll.

My engeneering mind says me: The rear rotor, the main bearing gearbox, Pilot bearing and throw out clutch bearing are weak first. Depends on the slightly more heat in this section. The cool air from the hood is a direct cooling update and Btw mud isn't a problem since 4 years.

It's amazingly lighter. I think there are threads on here where people have made it a functional intake for the NA. I'm sorta in the same boat. Have hood, steel hood is stupid heavy, but then, see above...

I could see why it would be considered phony on a nonturbo. I wouldnt grill anyone over it, unless their car was made to be pretentiously aggressive looking. I bought one to eventually replace my steel hood cause its so much lighter, and I think it completes the FC aesthetically. To each his own, though.

Convertibles came with non-vented aluminum hoods.
I've had two major reservations about the turbo hood on my na-
...seems like a silly place to intentionally introduce water onto the engine
...concerns about disrupting engine bay airflow for no real reason
I'm all for a real extractor hood or even vents at the front of the hood, just behind the radiator but I don't see what good the placement of the turbo's vent does for the na.
I did have a turbo hood for a few months and didn't note any ill effects, so the objections are probably more hypothetical than anything else but I definately did not care for the asymmetrical bulge location.

Any instructions for making a functional extractor/intake for the NA using the scoop?
Now everyone has me worrying about the water ingress.

Not saying things can't and won't happen, but there's not much to be concerned about with the exception of the alternator.

Great discussion guys, I really like the Turbo look but I think Im going to keep my car slick right now. My donor car is a 86 GXL that had the turbo hood and spoiler on. I only have a couple things left I would like to do to my car and will start a build on the donor. As for the donor car I have, my 10 year old son has decided he wants it. That means I have 5 to 6 years for us to get it road worthy.
