I don't know if you should drain it or not. If it helps, both Mazdaspeed (Mazda Motorsports) and Racing beat recommend petroleum oil for break-in, and either petroleum or synthetic oil after that. See the Mazdaspeed race engine break-in procedure here:

I agree that synthetic engine oil is a waste of money for a street car, especially the lame Syn-Tec, etc., that has been previously mentioned. Do not use "race" oil in a street car.

I know that, but I don't think 1 quart per 1k miles is correct. After switching to Valvoline VR1 it went down to 1 quart per 2500-3000 miles.

BTw - That was using 20-50.
