Symptoms related to OMP/Limp Mode
I know there are dozens of threads about the OMP failure/ Limp mode issues but I was unable to find an answer in the searches I did. I have a NA S5, no upgrades, gutted the cats cause they were clogged about a year and a half ago. I am having a couple problems, not sure if they are related or not, but I will run through some of it real quick.
When cold, the car runs fine, after driving for a while, sometimes it will drop into limp mode, more often on warmer days, and once i stop and restart the car usually the car will go into limp mode also, Sometimes the car will drop back out of limp mode while driving also. The car also has issues getting hot, again on warm days, once I hit around 60-70mph+ (depending on the day), the temp gauge in the car may start to go up, if i crank the heat in the car and set it to vent, it will usually keep the temp in check as long as i don't push the car to much more.... (which is no fun with bad window switches) None the less one thing at a time.
What I'm most curious about is, weather or not the car running fine for a period of time, is common with OMP/ECU failures or if there is something else i should look for, I will try to pull the codes, when I can but the check engine light never comes on while driving. I've just never seen anyone describe when what happens if it's constantly in limp mode for this problem or anything like that.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you should check the codes, its really easy.
there are actually a couple of codes that can cause limp home but do not turn on the CE light, this is why step one is to check the codes.
there is a page in the FSM that lists the codes, and it lists if it turns on the light or not.

I tried to check for the engine codes, but there were none, when i hooked up the wire per the instructions i read, the CE light on the dash just turned off. .. Should I try again leaving the car running while it's acting up?

i know exactly what your problem is:
it is the coolant thermo sensor in the back of the water pump. this happened to me. when the car warms up and starts to run funky, disconnect the sensor in the back of the water pump and see how it runs then. if it fixes it, then you need to replace that sensor.
