Swap or sell?

Ok here is what I cant decide right now.

I have an 87 GXL, i am planning on turbo swapping it so far.

The car is in great condition, mechanically, there is an oil leak, and there is a hesitation that i think has to do with the ecu ground. The interior is an 8.5 out of 10, needs a demister vent, cracked idiot light surround, smal tear in drivers seat that is repairable. Original radio surround is still good even.

Outside, there is a teensy amount of rust on the bottom of one fender. A small amount in the rear wheel wells, easily repairable.

The ar has been garaged up until i bought it, when cleaned and waxed the paint shines like new. Car was stock until i put an exhaust and intake on it.

I'd like to swap it, but i know it's a hassle finding the little parts you'd need, and the slight differences in the wiring, though i'm going standalone anyway.

I'm wondering if perhaps it would be a better idea to fix the little things, polish the outside of the ar and sell it, and buy a T2 with a blown engine but with a similar interior/exterior. Since i have a low mileage tranny and am already building an engine.

The problem is, the ars book value is about $3500, and i'm sure no one will want to pay that. None the less 3000. Car has 168k, engine was replaced at 99k.

So is it worth it to save and swap it, especially since i got it for $1500, or try to sell it? If i swapped it, i'd pull the perfectly good working r-12 non leaking ac and the powersteering .

Might I ask, how do you figure your 168k mile car is worth twice the amount you paid for?

Nada, kbb?
Plus i bought it with a bad oil leak and a fuel leak, and when i sell it it will have the interior at %100, if i do. The rust will be repaired and the paint will be matched to the rest of the car.

I'm lucky i'm the first one to call the guy, there were at least 7 other people behind me wanting the car.

It's not a **** buket like most of the FCs you see out there. It's actually a nice car, that's why i dont know if i should keep it and tear it apart or hope that someone else would enjoy it more how it is.

ok.. i was in the same delima you were in.. so let me share my 2 sense..

just to say you let your car go for 1500.. you still need to find yourself a nice T2 right? so how much is that going to run you? $4-5k?

and how much is the swap? 3500 or so? *depends on where you get your parts and who does the swap*

the good of getting a T2 ready to go:
- car is already T2, no brainer on that one.
- save yourself some trouble from headache later on.
- no need to source the parts.. o god is that a process on it's own

the bad.. or imo bad..
- motor is probably old and you'd have to rebuild it later.. which will cost you more money.. or worse, a lemon.. we get that a lot in NY.. lol..
- you don't know if the T2 is going to be as good as your NA (cosmatic/condition wise)

there's a huge list of factors in my head.. i can't type it all cuz i'm at work.. so lemme just tell you my conclusion.. i'm going for the swap.. cuz my NA is clean (in and out), drives fine, no problems at all.. so it's really weighting the possibilities yourself.. hope this helps brother..

Id say keep it and keep on with your plans. $1500 looks like it was a good deal on it, pretty damn clean FC. Take it from me, you'll regret it if you sell it and try to find something else. When you have something clean and you have plans for it, it usualy pays to stick with them to the end rather than back out half way. So my final vote is keep it! You could probably get $3000 for it if the interior is as clean as the exterior, but trying to find a T2 in equal condition for that price will be tough, blown engine or not. KEEP KEEP KEEP!!!

i think you should sell it to me for 200...yea your car is that bad

no seriously you should keep it...it looks great, plus doing work on your own car always makes you feel like its more your car than anything else, it makes you feel like theres some weird mystical bond between man and machine.......well atleast thats how i feel........what??.........dont look at me that way!!!!

FC's w/ clean interior and exterior get harder and harder to find every day, and TII's in that condition will prolly cost you at least 3-4k +

Although it may be a chore to find some of the mechanical bits for a T II swap, they are in general easier to come across than a complete car in good condition. Plus you could probably pic up a T II w/ blown engine/ for a lot less, since the body/interior condition won't be a major concern.

I was in the exact oposite situation where I had a new motor in a car w/ crappy int/ext and was looking for a clean roller to swap it into. Ended up finding a deal and buying a whole running car.

It really all depends on what kind of opportunity presents itself.
