surging as car warms up

It's probably been covered at some time, but this is the problem. I start my 86 rx-7, idles high for several seconds and then returns to a normal idle. After a few minutes of warming(or driving), car starts surging between 1300rpm and 1800 rpm. This goes on for another few minutes. Whwn surging stops, temp gauge starts climbing to normal temp. Car runs fine after this. I've had the injectors cleaned, new plugs and wires, and O2sensor. Also had cats taken off(no emissions testing in my town). Cars seems to run a bit rich judging from smell, but I don't know how to change that. I can unplug what I believe is the TPS on top of the TB and problem is solved, but I'm afraid to leave it unplugged. I tested that thing according to Haynes and it checks out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

It is the TPS out of adjustment. Mine did this, till I fixed the TPS. Do a search on the TPS, or just click here for a great write-up!

hmm i thought it was part of mazda's accelerating warm up system. Mine does it from time to time, whenever it wants to.

The AWS, as far as I know, is supposed to run the motor to 3k at startup and gradually decrease idle as engine temp increases. It shouldnt allow surging. Its most likely the TPS.

I see that the post specified TII but I am almost positive that HAILERS doesnt run turbo 7s so it may work...Might be a good subject for a new post..

Yet another one...Apparently HAILERS does have a TII but the trick will work for NAs. There was an interesting note by Mazdaspeed7 where he basically states that disabling the AWS is almost more trouble then its worth. Might want to take that into consideration.

Mazdaspeed7:

I would not recommend removing that solenoid. You gain nothing at all, and you have to hold on the throttle until the car warms up, or it will stall. Once it warms up, everything is fine, but it is a hassle to have to sit in the car and hold on the throttle. I removed it from my car, but I will be putting it back on because its too much of a hassle.

For the bounce:
The TPS is in need of adjustment or replacement. Do a search for "setting TPS" you'll net plenty of results. Setting it is model year specific, so 86-88s setting differs slightly from 89-91s.

For the 3K startup:
Start your car in first gear, clutch in. Should start around 2K, blip the throttle a lil and it'll come down a tad more.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Supposedly it is something that can affect your emissions results, so I would guess that it could. I bet that the gains would be negligable.

Just closer to stock performance if you were far off to being with. Any gain no? Possible recooperation from a loss? Yes.
